Doesn't motive matter? Do you really think we should feel exactly the same about an accidental killing as we should feel about an intentional killing? Should we feel the same about an intentional killing in a burst of passion as about a killing that was preplanned and carried out using a careful, extended plan?joshuabgood wrote: ↑Thu Apr 30, 2026 11:06 amPerhaps the words should stir up the same feelings in us. That is the point I was trying to make. Assassinate perhaps shouldn't feel better or worse than *kill.* It is killing. And the categories we invent as humanity to stylize killing people (assassinate, execute, etc) made in the image of God with the potential for redemption, perhaps lowers the discourse from an ethical perspective founded in the message of Jesus.Valerie used the word "assassinate" because she wanted a word that would stir up stronger feelings than "kill" -
Assuming assassination is *worse* than execution or killing or whatever perhaps obfuscates the point and the message of the Prince of Peace.

I am not sure. But I do think we should mourn them all.ken_sylvania wrote: ↑Thu Apr 30, 2026 4:09 pmDoesn't motive matter? Obviously, God has a better plan than all this killing, whether sensible or senseless. But until Christ's return, we do have to accept he seems to have instituted a certain way for the world to be order, including both law enforcement, self defence, and "wars and rumours of wars".
As a Christian, we get a foretaste of the New Heaven & New Earth as we learn to "opt out" of our right to self defence and our right to participate in lawful law enforcement and in war.

True, and He is also going to do an awful lot of destroying/killing/asassinating people just as He commanded Israel to do, He did not want evil to reign but He even asked children & women be killed & if we read Revelations He will again have most of the living world killed.JohnH wrote: ↑Thu Apr 30, 2026 4:58 pm Obviously, God has a better plan than all this killing, whether sensible or senseless. I’m not sure how people can’t see that the regime in Iran was killing thousands of their own people and I guess we just don’t care.

It is clear in scripture that God has chosen to kill lots and lots of people, and it’s a valid interpretation of Revelation he will do so in the future.joshuabgood wrote: ↑Thu Apr 30, 2026 5:37 pmWe view God differently...it seems.Valerie wrote: ↑Thu Apr 30, 2026 5:21 pmTrue, and He is also going to do an awful lot of destroying/killing/asassinating people just as He commanded Israel to do, He did not want evil to reign but He even asked children & women be killed & if we read Revelations He will again have most of the living world killed.JohnH wrote: ↑Thu Apr 30, 2026 4:58 pm Obviously, God has a better plan than all this killing, whether sensible or senseless. Not to mention that whole casting us into hell if we don’t repent…

I am reminded that God told his people to accept their captivity by the pagans and to "seek the good of the city" where they were taken. Also the prophet Jonah was reprimanded by God for waiting in anticipation for Nineveh to be destroyed. God's heart is not for destruction even if he oversees it. Hearts in touch with God will mourn the destruction of his image.ken_sylvania wrote: ↑Thu Apr 30, 2026 5:47 pmYes, we should mourn them all.joshuabgood wrote: ↑Thu Apr 30, 2026 4:22 pmI am not sure. The Iranian regime IS for killing. The US government is for killing. God’s heart is not for that.
When you step back from politics, both governments have done what they think is right for their country but the US has invaded and killed far more especially under false claims such as WMD’s.
The US gave targeting information to Iraq and turned a blind eye to the Iraq chemical weapons program against Iran.
Even counting proxies, by all accounts US has killed more noncombatants not counting US proxies either in just Iraq alone.
I’m not defending Iran, but I’m also not defending America. Both commit evil acts.
