Its far easier to prevent something then allow something.
Now nations have to choose to either pay Iran and risk the US or "pay" the US and risk Iran.
Iran now ends up with only nations submitting to the US traveling in the strait which means either then US will "protect them" which turns into the first issue or demands the rest of the nations protect the ships.
Iran risks getting other nations involved by attacking any ships now that their toll comes with the risk of US ire and aside from perhaps China, India and Russia I doubt any country is willing to risk it. So effectively the strait is still blockaded by Iran but Iran can't make income off of it now.
The US now has taken "responsibility" to protect ships passing while denying that they are doing so. Which results in a worse political outcome for Iran or US? who knows.
Iran is going to suffer more for the poor, the food imported primarily.
Well. This video below was unexpected. Is Brandon correct?

i’m perfectly comfortable with an older, wiser, more docile Trump.

Brandon’s not correct.
Nobody can just redirect 20% of the world’s oil supply. There’s no immediate substitute to the Strait of Hormuz.
It’s not just about the crude oil itself, but also refining capacity. It’s also about long term contracts and shipping costs. The US doesn’t have the capacity to be the primary supplier of the world’s oil and neither does anyone else.
The price of oil has already jumped up to over $100 a barrel today because of this announcement. If the US goes through with this blockade, it’s a global disruption. Everyone loses.

The blockade is simply of ships going to/from Iranian ports (and Iran has been under sanctions anyway); it's similar in vein to the sanctions on Russian oil.
If Iran wants the blockade to end, they could probably negotiate having it end if they'd stop blockading ships going to Bahrain, Qatar, etc.

Again, the dynamic is that both sides think they’re winning. The more pressure Trump puts on Iran, the more they resist. Iran knows the blockade affects gas prices in the US and they know a midterm election is coming in November. They’re aware that high gas prices will have political consequences for Trump and the Republican Party.

Yeah, Democrats are really well known for making policy decisions to help lower gasoline prices.

Is it possible president Trump has finally encountered a symetrical foe? He blusters and threatens, they bluster and threaten back, he rage tweets, they make even meaner and angier memes against him, he makes demands they can never accept, they do the same. So far in his life this combination of big talk, threats, and ideological flexibility to walk away from previous commitments has worked just fine. Will this be the battle of Waterloo he can't get past...

And affordability was one of the reasons why Trump won the last election. What happens if he doesn’t deliver?

MB Ghalibaf is the Speaker of Iran’s Parliament. Iran understands the leverage they have.
Iran doesn’t have to win militarily. As the weaker party, they can make the cost of US’s actions as politically painful as possible. This is one form of asymmetrical warfare — Iran is throwing as many cogs into the gears to make the war costly to the US.
Iran is making a bet that their ability to absorb pain is greater than ours.
