Yeah and while its important to be consistent for our own witness such as not owning "self defense weapons" military styled weapons, not expressing support for killing... the bottom line is that these draft boards if called up are going to be unfavorable to anyone and the real test is going to be what you do when denied. Given I haven't heard about Amish or Mennonites in prison during Vietnam... I'd wonder if they compromised or if the appeal process worked most of the time.Judas Maccabeus wrote: ↑Sat Apr 04, 2026 11:02 pmCurrently, it may be the “turkey farm” of the federal government. The actual boards in my day were “ prominent members of the community “ whatever that means. All I got from them after I sent in my form claiming to be opposed to war in any and all forms was a letter saying I was rejected because they “could not determine my requested status. If they actually READ it, it would be very clear. I sent in the appeals form, with another essay, and my catalog of people who had heard me express those views. Heard nothing, than got a letter stating they were not going to hear my appeal. No one from my year was drafted. I had a middle of the pile number, I think in the low 200s.ken_sylvania wrote: ↑Sat Apr 04, 2026 10:23 pmWhere's Ken when we need him. He would say the SSS consists of people who couldn't make it anywhere else so they got put here where they can't cause problems.Judas Maccabeus wrote: ↑Sat Apr 04, 2026 9:10 pm It is not the military that will run the Selective Service System, but patronage appointed civilians, if that is any better.
I expect the new version to be even less competent.

There is now historic precedent set for Anabaptists and some others that are well known as "Peace" churches. There will be no draft anytime soon. I think someone once said don't worry about tomorrow... Who was that? Someone quite wise and someone I suspect we should listen to. Maybe a list will help.
1. There will be no draft.
2. Anabaptists ARE given CO status.
3. Don't worry about tomorrow.

Yes and no. We have a first hand witness of the process resulting in a denial. We can't say for sure on 2. As for 1, we will see.Robert wrote: ↑Sun Apr 05, 2026 9:38 amThere is now historic precedent set for Anabaptists and some others that are well known as "Peace" churches. As for 3, of course but we are speculating like always.

Happy Easter everyone! Just a reminder, bombing civilian power plants is a war crime.

The electricity infrastructure is operated by the IRGC, like pretty much every other highly profitable business in Iran.Szdfan wrote: ↑Sun Apr 05, 2026 12:26 pm Posted by Trump today on Easter:

Since the draft ended in 1072, a good 50 years ago, the first hand witness must be quite old.

Re: US Attacks Iran 2026
Doesn’t matter. Even if the government owns power plants and power grids, it’s still considered civilian infrastructure because it serves civilians. That’s exactly why international law doesn’t consider ownership the standard. By your logic, it’s permissible to bomb hospitals if they’re government owned.JohnH wrote: ↑Sun Apr 05, 2026 2:25 pmThe electricity infrastructure is operated by the IRGC, like pretty much every other highly profitable business in Iran.Szdfan wrote: ↑Sun Apr 05, 2026 12:26 pm Posted by Trump today on Easter:

That’s hard to square with a pro-life position.

Since the Geneva Conventions established modern international law in 1949 and the Additional Protocol I of 1977. The US signed both of them.
Relevant articles include:
- Article 48 – Principle of Distinction: parties must distinguish between civilians and military targets
- Article 52 – Civilian Objects: civilian objects (like power plants) cannot be targeted unless they become military objectives
- Article 54 – Objects Indispensable to Civilian Survival: Prohibits attacking infrastructure essential to civilians (food, water, etc.)
- Article 51 – Proportionality: Attacks causing excessive civilian harm are prohibited.
