God's gender

Post by joshuabgood »

Is God male? If the answer is yes...in what sense is he male in the same way that we think of as male and female, biologically, sexually, et al.

Is God female? If the answer is yes...same questions as above?

Is God a perfect representation of both genders? If so, why is he mostly referred to as a male scripturally?

Discuss - I am interested in your thoughts.

What does "spiritually male" mean? And, does he have feminine qualities/characteristics?

Spiritually male as in he does stereotypically male things like creating, ordering, overseeing creation, etc. As for feminine qualities, Jesus acts in a feminine way throughout scripture that I thought stands out from the rest of the bible. He cries publicly when his friends die, his mode of prayer is about asking and receiving, self sacrificial love is emphasized. Even with all that there seems to be more male traits in God than female, so thats what i mean by spiritually male

Jesus, the Son of God, specifically calls God Father. I’ll take his word for it as Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through him. John 14:6

Adam was made in the image of God, woman was made from man, ergo woman is made from God.

Every single one of these attributes that you’re labeling at as masculine or feminine is a cultural application and multiple men in the Bible actually cried openly

-Jesus wasn’t female.
-Mankind, not just males, are in Gods likeness.
-God reveals himself to mankind, as a Father.

I was going to say the same thing. Jesus did not refer to God as female. Neither did he refer to God as neutral, which technically might be true, but used masculine language and identity. His example is good enough for me to follow.

To the original question of God's actual gender, I think this is more of a category error than a question to be resolved. It's like asking how tall is God or what is his shoe size, it's an irrational question like asking if humans molt in the summer or winter.

Maybe...but are we made in God's image?

Of course, but I don't understand why this conflicts with my answer. Our height or shoe sizes don't negate the image of God even though it simply doesn't apply to him.
