Is it even possible for the government to hide reality and curate news now to the extent it was then?

If they can shut off internet, that would be one tool, and then if the media zone was simply flooded with outlandish tales in all extremes, no one would know what the truth was, even if it was out there.

The latter is probably what the situation is for us, at least online on X or Facebook etc.

In Iran, they shut off the public Internet and also flood the zone with all kinds of AI generated stuff. From what I understand, though, most of the public does not believe official government news channels.

All they need is enough believers to keep the government in power.

A wee little man can’t say, I’m sorry. A big man owns his mistakes and apologizes.
A wee little man trusts himself and his own discernment. A big man is humble enough to know that he needs the counsel and input of others.

These days you can get sued or put out of business if you challenge the government narrative.

I don't think the Iranian populace really has much control over who is in power. The regime does, which controls most of the highly profitable industries in the country that the populace relies on for essential things like fuel or electricity.

Both of these sound very similar to many countries.

Which apparently helped Iran get worse
I’m not sure how bombing Iran and killing civilians is going to get them to stop chanting “Death to America.”
Dead people don't chant "Death to America"
True…but their surviving family and neighbors might.
