I can remember all the mocking in the US about the incompetence of Russia’s military. I can just easily imagine all the mocking the is going on in foreign countries about the current US military efforts.
Burning their own aircraft carrier, don’t know how to build ships right, clumsily crashing their own planes together, getting shot down by their allies, etc.

Wait, did you mean the previous administration where we had Biden as the named president but actually somebody else was running the country? Still under investigation.

I think JohnH has lost the thread. This is what I said about those countries:
The whole region is a mess. Creating more chaos does not help. This kind of chaos has real victims. Christians are supposed to be there for the victims, not cheering on the violence.Syria is a shambles. So is Lebanon. So are Iraq and Afghanistan. So is Gaza. When are we going to start building something instead of just tearing things down?
I don't understand why I'm being asked to decide who specifically they are victims of. And with so many people victimizing others, the answer is not always clean.

1. Are we discussing the topic? Good.
2. Are we going around and around in a fight? Let's stop doing that.
3. Is there some serious wrongdoing or relational injury? Let's address that, probably not in public and certainly not for show.

If it teaches us to act more wisely, that could be a good thing.R7ehr wrote: ↑Fri Mar 20, 2026 10:16 am I can remember all the mocking in the US about the incompetence of Russia’s military. I expect some sort of ground invasion of Iran by the US before too long.

There are only so many options, stand back a watch it burn, get in and get dirty or persuade a weaker ally to get in and get dirty. The last several years didn't look to me like an exercise in building alliances, so the last option is not workable.
I suspect you are right. All of this hinges on the whims of the president as far as I can see, and my guess is he doesn't have the patience to stand by and risk rising energy costs, supply chain problems and falling economic numbers this close to the elections. I find it more likely he will gamble on a Rambo style invasion, set up compliant puppet regime and try to get out as fast as possible.

https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-ea ... 026-03-19/"I'm not putting troops anywhere," Trump said in response to a reporter who asked whether he was planning to send more service members to the region. "If I were, I certainly wouldn't tell you. But I'm not putting troops. We will do whatever is necessary."
Translation I’m putting troops in Iran, but I don’t want to say I’m putting troops in Iran.

Based on the buildup to Venezuela, and then to the air war in Iran, this kind of action, along with Trump being real coy with questions about boots on the ground, means only one thing. The marines are hitting the sand.barnhart wrote: ↑Fri Mar 20, 2026 4:50 pmThere are only so many options, stand back a watch it burn, get in and get dirty or persuade a weaker ally to get in and get dirty. Re: US Attacks Iran 2026
I doubt the Trump admin has the stomach to set up a puppet regime - nor will the established government go away that easily. I suspect in a week or two, when the US and Israel feel they have crippled the military complex & nuclear development sufficiently, they will pull back and let Iran figure out how to put the pieces back together. The US may conceivably send ground troops to hold a strategic area, like the oil fields (thus giving the US economic leverage a la Venezuela), but I doubt they will hold much more. We might go in to dismantle the Uranium enrichment process as well if it is deemed feasible with only a few lost lives.mike wrote: ↑Fri Mar 20, 2026 5:08 pmBased on the buildup to Venezuela, and then to the air war in Iran, this kind of action, along with Trump being real coy with questions about boots on the ground, means only one thing.
