Re: Wholesalers - damaged cans?
Our Walmart doesn’t discount them. They sell them at full price or tries to. Was talking to a buddy today and he said the bent cans problem has been going on since last year and it’s not just the dog food. So maybe it’s this one store. Still not buying them. Found a couple of flats of the dog food with good cans at an independent grocery. They only charged 10¢ more per can. That errand checked off the list.QuietlyListening wrote: ↑Sun Mar 15, 2026 12:37 pm Many grocery stores around here have a bent and dent shelf - often in the back. We don't have a bent and dent store. I'll buy them on sale if they aren't bulging etc.

I hate wasting products that people worked hard to make. I'll buy the dented cans and crushed boxes so they don't end up in the landfill.

Wife: I much prefer corned beef hash. It looks like canned dog food, but tastes a lot better.

Usable for some purposes, but I prefer dismantling falling-down sheds and reclaiming what can be salvaged.

Lowe’s has a cull cart outside that’s half off. I can usually find pieces there that meet my needs.

Hole Sellers.
When I was 17 I spent the Summer with my Grandma on the farm, helping out with post harvest field work. My Uncle was in the process of taking over the farm, and I lived with him and my Aunt the following summer. During the first summer my Uncle was having a well drilled, so it was probably then that he got to joking about selling off old dry wells. Since there were a couple of dry wells on the farm, he suggested that we pull them out and cut them up for post holes. He said the important thing is to remember exactly where you stacked them, so you don't accidentally fall in.

A bit late to the party.JohnL wrote: ↑Fri Mar 13, 2026 11:04 am From what I read a few of you might be in wholesale foods distribution. I got a question for you.
Are you seeing a lot more canned goods coming through lately that are badly damaged? I went to Walmart to buy some canned dog food last week and almost every single can on the shelf was bent up and one looked like it was folded in half.
Is this a problem anywhere else?
My employer sold pet food off and on over the years. Not sure if they do at the moment. We used to offer damaged product to the employees at a 50% discount but we did away with that program many years ago. Too much drama. Before I went on the road, any and all damage, discontinued, or close dated stuff went to Blessings of Hope in Lancaster County. We used to donate that type of thing to CAM, but that went side ways. Another story for another day.
When I had my hand in damage and the like, I saw to it the employees got a fair share. I always felt the folks doing the real actual work should get a chance at it. Not everyone agreed, but at the time, it was my gig.
Not much got dropped in a dumpster under my watch unless the FDA or state had to be involved.
