Laundry. A chore. A science. An art.

My wife did 1,196 loads of laundry in 2024. Peak month was 113 loads. Peak week was 32 loads. Most in one day was 13.

Just one washer and dryer. Both Speed Queen. And a clothes line for drying too.

We use a laundromat for four or five regular sized loads per week. They do have very large washers as well but it makes more sense for us to use the smaller size.

WINNING!

Not yet starting taxes, i started laundry!
With intent to do both, of course.

Weirdly, last night i turned the manual knob to increase water level. “POP” o.no.
Everything looked fine. Water filling up. No problem?

Problem.
i’ve been using COLD water for everything. The water changed to HOT. o.no. Service call. $$$$
The temp knob seems .. not working.

i let it go overnight. Why couldn’t it stick on COLD?! i was trying to think how to switch it to COLD.

This morning it dawned on me, WATER SHUT OFF VALVES. :D

i shut off the HOT.
Now COLD is working like nothing happened. i have no idea how this can be.

yay.

MORE WINNING!

i spilled a chocolate drink on a fav cotton shirt, a nice big stain. light white-blue stripes.
i was so dismayed, instead of treating it right away, i put it to the side and forgot about it. for months.

i tackled it with cold water and WHINK WASH AWAY stain remover, 24 hr soak.
It worked great.

i’m still washing blacks in 3 cups of vinegar in my regular washing machine, cold water.
i’m happy with it. i like “no suds” laundry with well water and septic tank.

plus, i think the vinegar does a passive cleaning of the washer as a bonus.

THE SPRUCE / Troubleshoot

It let me finish my load of darks in vinegar. Very considerate. Gratitude.

i doubt it’s a big problem. But. Parts?? It’s all manual. No flashing lights.

A good appliance repairman could fix it. You might check if one is around in your area.

It appears the *s m a l l* local shop i bought it from is still in business.
i’ll drive by to see for myself. those guys (brothers) are past retirement age! this could be interesting.

i expect if they’re working it’s when+where+if they choose.

they sold mostly Whirlpool back then, saying it was the easiest to repair brand.

it’s been nearly 20 years since they’ve seen me.

i bought several Whirlpool appliances from them in the past.

they could all go out this year.
my water heater, furnace, car, too. roof.

o.no. o.no. o.no no no no no.

as my 90+yr old grandmother in law once complained,
“warranties don’t go long enough. 20 years rolls by pretty quick!”

at the time, with a new infant, we found that a SHOCKING statement. 20 YEARS. SHE WAS SERIOUS.

perspective changes. oof. does it ever. she lived to within days of 101.
at home on the farm with her son who never married.

that guy?? maybe Dark Triad stuff. he lived into his 90’s.
it wasn’t age that brought on his madness. it didn’t go away with age.

may they all be resting in peace. [not my appliances!]
