Should individuals have to identify themselves to the government?

Things that are not part of politics happening presently and how we approach or address it as Anabaptists.

Did you use an LLM to write that?

If so, would you mind sharing the prompt?

1. Are we discussing the topic? Good.
2. Are we going around and around in a fight? Let's stop doing that.
3. Is there some serious wrongdoing or relational injury? Let's address that, probably not in public and certainly not for show.

But basically, the answer is that I wrote it, but I used an LLM for several things, used various news sources for others, and Google for others. It took me about an hour because I wanted to make sure it was factual. So there is no prompt that reconstructs all that work, if you want to compare it against your favorite LLM, just ask for a fact check and paste in my post.

For instance, I asked Grok this:
Fact check this:
[ ... pasted text from my post ...]
Here's how it responded:

The claim is largely accurate based on recent reporting from January and February 2026, with strong support for the key elements described, though some details (like the exact name "Alex Pretti" and minor phrasing) align closely with verified events involving Alex Jeffrey Pretti.

Portland 2020 Example
This part is well-established and accurate. In summer 2020, during protests in Portland, Oregon, federal agents (from agencies like DHS, CBP, U.S. Marshals, and Federal Protective Service) deployed in response to unrest near the federal courthouse. They used unmarked vehicles to detain individuals, often without clear identification of themselves or their agencies. Officers wore camouflage or uniforms with generic "POLICE" patches but lacked visible names, badge numbers, or specific agency insignia in many cases. Detainees were sometimes taken away without immediate explanation, leading to confusion about their location and the detaining authority.
  • Oregon's governor (Kate Brown), Portland's mayor, and others publicly condemned the tactics.
  • Lawsuits were filed alleging violations of rights.
  • This prompted broader calls (including legislation in the 2021 NDAA) for federal agents to wear visible identification during civil disturbance responses.
This matches the claim's description of repeated issues with identification, leading to pushes for better transparency.

Alex Pretti Shooting in Minneapolis
This incident occurred on January 24, 2026, in Minneapolis. Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse at a VA hospital, was fatally shot by two federal agents from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP, including Border Patrol) during an immigration enforcement operation amid protests.

Key elements of the claim check out:
  • Federal immigration agents were involved (CBP/Border Patrol, not explicitly "immigration" like ICE in all reports, but under DHS enforcement).
  • Pretti was armed (legally owned handgun), and federal accounts stated agents fired in self-defense after he resisted disarming during a struggle; bystander videos and analyses (e.g., from CNN, PBS) have shown disputes over escalation, including agents using pepper spray/strikes before shots were fired, and some reports note the federal initial statements conflicted with footage in details (e.g., a DHS/CBP report to Congress did not mention Pretti reaching for his firearm in some descriptions).
  • The shooting sparked protests, memorials, and demands for transparency.
  • Minnesota officials (including the governor, Minneapolis mayor, local law enforcement, and the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension/BCA) pressed for cooperation and a full investigation. State prosecutors demanded evidence from federal authorities.
  • The FBI informed Minnesota investigators (BCA) it would not share information or evidence, described by BCA Superintendent Drew Evans as "concerning and unprecedented." This hampered state efforts, leading to lawsuits or demands for access.
  • Agent names (e.g., Border Patrol agent Jesus Ochoa and CBP officer Raymundo Gutierrez) were not initially released by the government but were later identified by outside news organizations (e.g., ProPublica via government records in early February 2026).
This supports the claim's points on withheld identities (initially), conflicting early statements vs. footage, lack of transparency/cooperation, and resulting accountability challenges.

Broader Claims on Accountability and Criticism
  • The claim that federal withholding makes individual accountability and civil action harder is a reasonable inference from the reported lack of cooperation.
  • Criticism from former law enforcement, policing experts, and others questioning tactics, use of force, and transparency has appeared in coverage (e.g., debates over escalation in videos, calls for independent probes).
  • The note on "normally" expecting inter-agency cooperation but not getting it here aligns with state officials' statements.
No major fabrications appear; the text accurately reflects reported events from credible sources (BBC, Wikipedia summary, ProPublica, NPR, Guardian, AP, etc.). Minor variations (e.g., exact agency phrasing or date nuances) exist but do not undermine the core facts. The overall narrative holds up as factual.
