I feel sorry for the egg producers. I guess the catch-up (after that business with culling chicken flocks) has done flooded the market. Large eggs have dropped another $.24 to $.68/dz. this week. Last year on this exact day they were $5.82/dz and by the end of January 2025 they were over $7. A difference of 10X. Unbelievable. My brother in law knows of growers in his state (Indiana) where they are simply dumping their eggs.
Eggs are one of those few items we price on profit/case rather than % margin because of the wild price fluctuations. So the margins are much higher when the price is low like this.

The strange thing is avian flu is still going around. One of my vendor's drivers just told me this morning that his friend just had a flock culled.JohnL wrote: ↑Fri Jan 09, 2026 10:42 amI feel sorry for the egg producers. Somewhere in eastern PA. It is the only good option once a flock has the virus. They're all going to die anyway.

My local egg production is quite poor and is not meeting local demand. We just had to buy eggs at Costco again.

Our chickens molted a month or two ago and just will not restart laying. We finally put a 24-hour light in the coop a few weeks ago hoping it would make a difference. Nothing yet. Not sure how long till we simply 'cull' them. There aren't any signs of a critter getting the eggs.

I actually just let them rest over the winter and don’t hear their barn, so they grow a nice undercoat of soft, warm down. They seem to do fine in the cold and don’t even need feed unless we have prolonged snow cover. We still get a few eggs a day, but if I put lights on them that mimicked daylight we’d get more.mike wrote: ↑Fri Jan 09, 2026 8:21 pmOur chickens molted a month or two ago and just will not restart laying. Hens have a lifetime output of about 500 eggs and then they need culled.

Our hens aren't anywhere near the end of their lifetime output or else I'd have made chicken soup already.JohnH wrote: ↑Fri Jan 09, 2026 8:49 pmI actually just let them rest over the winter and don’t hear their barn, so they grow a nice undercoat of soft, warm down.
