Trump Accounts for Children

Things that are not part of politics happening presently and how we approach or address it as Anabaptists.

Trump Accounts for Children

Post by Valerie »

This isn’t “political “ I just watched the announcement of this- would Anabaptist parents take this opportunity? Not sure how they feel about investing in 401ks. Personally, I think it’s a fantastic idea as we find young people struggling so much to afford college or afford their first home so starting out this way seems like a good idea.

I expect most of the Ultra-Conservatives will say "No, thank you" and continue working to provide for their own families. Old-Order might be more of a mixed bag with some agreeing to come suck on the government teat. The moderate and liberal groups will say "Oh, free money, this is good!" and be thankful that now they can continue to spend their money on trips, vacations, and visits to the coffee shop instead of having to save it for their children's education.

Seems the same as refundable child tax credit.

That's why I expect them to handle it about the same way as they do the refundable child tax credit.

I think it’s unwise to invest in the stock market and I would disagree with it for Christians.

I'm not entirely opposed to saving for life events but I am suspicious of a worldview that assumes markets, investments and capitalism are magical solutions for human problems. Investments and markets do not work, they capture value from people who do. Well managed, there can be reciprocal value but there is also potential (likely-hood?) for the poor to be crushed down further while the rich become richer. There might be some value in this type of proposal but there is no magic, only a pot of reserved value for someone or some movement to tap into in the future. As the proverbs tell us, riches take wings and fly away.

Well, there's now an extra $250 for Trump accounts that's being donated from a private foundation.
Thanks to the Dell’s unprecedented gift, the first 25 million American children age 10 and under living in ZIP codes with median incomes below $150,000 will receive an additional $250. This historic act of generosity will give millions of low- and middle-income children an even stronger shot at achieving the American Dream.

Where do you suggest investing money if not in stocks?

In terms of children, I’m not sure. I’m not a financial guy and every thought I have seems subject to the same problem.
If I had to recommend for them, I would say bonds rather then stocks. That’s more of a risk assessment, from a religious perspective I would be opposed to all of it.
