The fact that this idea was even considered makes me wonder about these people.ohio jones wrote: ↑Mon Nov 03, 2025 10:51 pmhttps://melscience.com/US-en/articles/barium/Barium absorbs X-rays well. If a child accidentally swallowed a piece of Lego, it could easily be found in the digestive tract on an X-ray scan. Unfortunately, the plastic lost durability, and industrial barium sulfate was not sufficiently pure and was toxic, so the idea was dropped.

Well, that’s an interesting idea and it actually somewhat makes sense. after all barium sulfate is not toxic as it’s insoluble.JohnL wrote: ↑Wed Nov 05, 2025 7:20 pmThe fact that this idea was even considered makes me wonder about these people.ohio jones wrote: ↑Mon Nov 03, 2025 10:51 pmhttps://melscience.com/US-en/articles/barium/Barium absorbs X-rays well. The primary issue was two fold, sourcing the pure stock which would’ve had to have a higher purity than industrial use, ranging towards the medical grade. The second issue was it caused the legos not to be as durable.
So ultimately, they couldn’t source enough to make it child safe at an economical value, nor could they retain the strength Legos are known for.
On the grade of stupid ideas, I’d say this one was fairly smart. It’s just met reality of economics and manufacturing capabilities.
It’s not quite like for example when I thought heating up the Betadine spray would be nice for the patients.
My position was one of uneducated, but smart enough to actually ask who knew. Turns out it increases the toxicity of it to increase the temperature.

If a child ingests a Lego that can't be located by X-ray, and they die as a result, I guess you just barium.JohnL wrote: ↑Wed Nov 05, 2025 7:20 pmThe fact that this idea was even considered makes me wonder about these people.ohio jones wrote: ↑Mon Nov 03, 2025 10:51 pmhttps://melscience.com/US-en/articles/barium/Barium absorbs X-rays well. Seriously, John, why not let people discuss the subject of the thread in the thread? Why participate in the thread at all if want to avoid discussing the subject?JohnH wrote: ↑Fri Nov 07, 2025 4:10 pmI'm specifically asking you if you think compiling lists of right-wing political figures is appropriate in a "General Theology" thread.Bootstrap wrote: ↑Fri Nov 07, 2025 2:00 pmSee the Bible verses that I posted a few posts back. Or see the OP, which asks whether a political statement about "law and order" really does represent what Jesus taught. He was responding to this question:
I don't think Jesus stands for the kind of "law and order" that we see in secular politics. That's the subject of this thread.I think that Christ is for law and order.
Any comments on the subject of this thread? On the Bible verses that have been cited? On whether Christians should associate "law and order" with our own faith?
Do you have Bible verses to support that?

1. Are we discussing the topic? Good.
2. Are we going around and around in a fight? Let's stop doing that.
3. Is there some serious wrongdoing or relational injury? Let's address that, probably not in public and certainly not for show.

Re: David Luthy
I am familiar with David Luthy and his Library , know several of his children, and have a different aspect of the muddy creek Library that holds some of his very rare books ..I'm not sure what the connection is between the library ,and Fairmont homes , a nursing home ,on whose property it is located for some reason or other ,
someone I know who was quite close to David Luthy, from Aylmer Ont ,for many years , needed ,as an older person , a suitable place to stay , and was referred to and applied to Fairmont homes for residence , but was rejected , by the present Director of the nursing home , who I won't mention by name , But who I believe is a real "Wolf" , in Anabaptist sheep's clothing ,so to speak. He is all about the money , no question about it...
The prospective resident had almost a million dollars in savings , but was declined because his Amish heritage had caused him to forgo Social Security ,which was unfortunate , to be exempt, in other words .....
The director's words were ,,,,"No social security, he may run out of money at some point"....even if he has a million dollars , he was rejected as a prospective resident of Fairmont homes...
This is probably a reason why the family stopped sending more of the materials down, because Fairmont homes appears to be a Mennonite money making machine .....they will fail at some point , and then what will happen to all the valuable books and stuff stored there ?

Re: David Luthy
Fairmount's prices are not out of line with other retirement communities in the area. They might in fact be a little on the low side in comparison, but a million doesn't go far anymore. If he lives in a median price apartment for 5 years, needs personal care in that apartment for 3 more years, and then needs nursing care for 2 years, guess what? That million is gone. And that's not including expenditures for food (for the first five years), clothes, medical care beyond the in-house nursing, prescriptions, and other necessities. It's not a question of if he will run out of money, but when.Jeff Altweg wrote: ↑Fri Nov 07, 2025 10:44 pm The director's words were ,,,,"No social security, he may run out of money at some point"....even if he has a million dollars , he was rejected as a prospective resident of Fairmont homes...
If one does not participate in Social Security, they need to have social security. And that social system tends to have a different approach than retirement communities.

In that forum, we were discussing whether Jesus would approve of what politicians call "law and order". I think we need to be able to discuss what the world throws at us from a Christian perspective.JohnH wrote: ↑Fri Nov 07, 2025 1:57 pmThat's nice, but what does compiling lists of right-wing authoritarians have to do with "General Theology"?Bootstrap wrote: ↑Fri Nov 07, 2025 1:55 pmI don't think "law and order" is a left-wing slogan. Stalin, Mao Zedong, Fidel Castro, and Hugo Chávez also used law as an instrument of control and oppression, but they used slogans like “revolutionary justice” or “defense of the revolution,” not “law and order.”
“Law and order” usually comes from the political right.
Frequently, when someone criticizes something the right is doing, you insist that people prove they are being fair by criticizing the left in exactly the same way. But the flaws of the right and the left are not identical. And insisting that we prove political purity means insisting on the partisan political lens. That effectively prevents us from discussing anything like this from a Christian perspective. And it happens over and over.
In effect, this is a way of ensuring that partisan political criteria trump the biblical lens.
If you happen to know of left-wing politicians who use the phrase "law and order" in the same way, mention them. In general, I think this is more of a right-wing slogan. And not usually in the mouths of conservative politicians who deeply respect the constitution and the rights it bestows.
In the thread this came from, I think it's more important to focus on what the Bible says about law and justice and how we should view these things as Christians. To do that, I think it's helpful to focus on Scripture and history, discussing them from various points of view. And to focus on the subject, not on implying things about people we disagree with.

This would be where you and I depart; I think the flaws that separate both left and right from being true follows of Jesus and the Bible are actually exactly the same flaws. Different window dressing, but the same fundamental urge underneath. But the flaws of the right and the left are not identical.
