Quite a few did - who found themselves imprisoned or silenced.
Spiritual discernment. If one is born again and led by the Spirit.

A wee little man can’t say, I’m sorry. A big man owns his mistakes and apologizes.
A wee little man trusts himself and his own discernment. A big man is humble enough to know that he needs the counsel and input of others.

I think it is safe to say a minority of Christians saw danger great enough to separate from it.

They referred to themselves as "The Confessing Church." Dietric Bonhoeffer was a prominent member. He was involved with an underground Christian community that was sort of like a cross between a seminary and a monastary. He wrote a book a out his experience there called "Life in Community".

I'm not sure what other sources, but I'm sure there are some books that cover "The Confessing Church."

The Bible is very easy to understand. But we Christians are a bunch of scheming swindlers. We pretend to be unable to understand it because we know very well that the minute we understand we are obliged to act accordingly.

The Barmen Declaration referenced in one of the threads here is a good place to start.

1. Are we discussing the topic? Good.
2. Are we going around and around in a fight? Let's stop doing that.
3. Is there some serious wrongdoing or relational injury? Let's address that, probably not in public and certainly not for show.
