Wife: we moved from a place that basically didn’t talk about prophecy and probably was leaning a millennial although I think the preacher called himself a pan millennial to a place where every once in a while we get the pre-TRIB sermon.

I personally would consider myself a pan whatever I am. I would lean pre-millennial, but I don’t even know what the millennial reign is going to be. Probably lean against the pre-TRIB rapture, and not sure what the tribulation will actually end up being. I basically was brainwashed on left behind books an a child and had a lot of fear from those. Doesn’t seem like the pre-Tribbers around here actually like those books. I do sometimes wonder though about how certain prophecies might get fulfilled.

I was listening to a really good talk on anabaptist perspectives about it, and I don’t know if I agree with everything he said or not, but I did appreciate hearing another perspective and also that he kept saying “I think.” He also didn’t think it was a top-tier doctrine that we had to correct all the pre-TRIB dispensationalists for. I would tend to agree with what he was talking about with post millennial not really making much sense, and also that Revelation is to help you prepare by getting your life right with God, and not just to freak you out and make you watch the news all the time looking for the signs.

If Jesus' first coming is any indication, those most certain about the details are the least likely to recognize it for what it truly is.

Yeah...the preterists say they already missed it.

Well... since I am not committed to dispensationalism I guess I'll carry on anyway.

What about Simeon and Anna?

I had them in mind, a long with the shepherds, as examples of the correct way to view prophecy. They understood broader meaning without seizing inflexibly on specific details.

Wife: The thing about them though is that they got the specific prophecy straight from the Holy Spirit and weren’t just interpreting estatology. It doesn’t mean someone out of the various camps hasn’t figured some stuff out, but the 3 wisemen seem like a better example than Simeon and Anna. I doubt even they saw all of it clearly though and only saw a part of it, and there seemed to be God’s direct leading and revealing in that as well.

It seems Simeon heard from the Holy Spirit that he would get to meet the Messiah. From what is recorded, it seems that Anna was not given that promise, but recognized him via help from the Holy Spirit. Do the rest of you agree?

How detailed were Simeon's and Anna's expectations and understandings? How do we know?

Regarding Simeon - yes.

Regarding Anna - the written record seems silent about whether Anna had a similar promise, and is also not specific as to whether she relied on Simeon's identification of the Messiah or whether it was revealed to her independently.
