The suspected shooter, a Tyler Robinson, is in custody.

He was apparently turned in by his father, who recognized him from the photos released by law enforcement.
As scriptures inform, being a parent can mean excruciating pain.
Praise God his father and pastor friend, found the strength to face brutal reality. They saved Tyler’s life.
Nothing will be easy. Tyler has an opportunity to repent and seek salvation.

Most definitely - this is a far better outcome for Tyler than what could have been. He will have the opportunity to defend himself and have the benefit of a trial, something he did not give Kirk. He will also have the opportunity to face the intense suffering and pain that he caused, and confront the evil within himself. For some reason God has given him mercy, and I hope he understands that and takes advantage of that.

I do find it kind of amusing and unseemly that our inept FBI director is out in front of the TV cameras crowing about how "WE GOT HIM!"

When they did nothing of the sort and he actually just walked into his local sheriff's office and turned himself in.

I've seen reports that his home church was Godspeak Calvary Chapel of Newbury Park, CA. I don't think they are Catholic. Would it be accurate to describe his religion as Christian Nationalism?
i’ve seen a brief statement from his young wife, i’m sure she’s beyond overwhelmed, in shock, and may be that way for years.
i’ve read she’s a devout Catholic, the children are being raised Catholic, Charlie has attended mass with them, maybe regularly?
(i identify with all of this, altho my husband didn’t die suddenly.) There’s never a good time or way.

Charlie was young, no one knows how a longer life on earth would have unfolded, i presume his faith was in process.
i presume faith is always in process, no matter days on earth. Always more to learn! Ways to grow.

i wouldn’t use the label Christian Nationalist, i avoid that label. i don’t see it bearing good fruit.

i continue to respect the Amish response to their horrifying loss at Nickel Mines, when elders firmly rejected all media coverage and protected their community from public scrutiny to the greatest extent possible.

I think he was a positive force for the country. We will never know what might have been.

He’s being compared to lots of different men, some comparisons strike me as odd. Esp former presidents.
Maybe a young Billy Graham? :? i don’t know.

yes.

for perspective, i was a new teen when JFK was assassinated.
as i remember, it was aired in full, altho static-y b+w television. our teachers brought televisions into our classes to view.

it was definitely “burned” into my/our young brains, but - adults, too!
it was shocking to everyone.

the differences today are both quantities and high quality images. and public opinions.
in the past, the vast majority of accessible news coverage AND opinions were professionals.

people had PLENTY of opinions! 100%
mostly shared at kitchen tables, local cafes, over backyard fences, etc.

We have been blessed with our freedoms for many years and as usual with many of our blessings, don't appreciate them until they're fading or taken away. For example, in the United States we can freely go about our lives, going to our favorite stores, restaurants, coffee shops and so on, without fear of being kidnapped and held for ransom; but in many parts of Latin America, the same has not been true for anyone who's moderately wealthy. A lot of countries lack this cultural norm/blessing that we take for granted.

Similarly, for the past 50 years, we in America have enjoyed remarkable political freedom to say whatever we want, have political debates, run for office, etc., without fear of getting hurt or murdered for what we say. This is a remarkable and rare achievement in world history, and it hasn't even been true in much of American history. The 1960s had a lot of political violence and assassinations. Also in the South prior to the Civil War, expressing anti-slavery opinions was a very dangerous thing to do. Presidents have still needed protection, and the occasional madman trying to assassinate someone couldn't be totally ruled out, but for most people, they could freely speak out without any reason to think they might get killed for it.

Unfortunately that seems to be changing.

One thing that defenders of the First Amendment have worried about recently is the heckler's veto - the idea that free speech gives them the right to shout down someone who is saying things they don't like. This is a misunderstanding of free speech, because it would put the hecklers in charge. You don't have the right to be in charge of what can or cannot be said; that stifles actual freedom. People have the right to protest other's speech, but not to shout down and stop it from happening. And certainly there is no right to kill the person who is saying something you dislike. If the heckler's veto is bad, the assassin's veto is worse. Political violence has to be unacceptable.

I appreciate that Charlie Kirk wanted to have conversations with the other side and interact with them. That's always better than not having any conversations. I was not a particular fan of some of his populist rhetoric and some of his opinions that went along with that (Trumpy/Christian Nationalist), but none of that matters now. If he was a believer as he professed, he is in God's presence. No one should be murdered for any reason, let alone for their political speech, and this is so sad for the wife and children he leaves behind.

To their credit, the vast majority of figures across the political spectrum have fully condemned the murder. We should remember this fact whenever we see people bring up random examples of this or that professor or this unknown guy on social media who say that he deserved it. In today's media culture, it will always be possible to find those types of people. They should be ignored, not taken as represent of most of the other side. Don't listen to people who claim that the Democrats are waging war on you or they're out to get you. Gavin Newsom, for example, had Charlie Kirk on his podcast earlier this year. That seems like a weird thing for someone with presidential aspirations to do if he's fighting a war against you.

This should be a very sobering moment. It should be a warning to us to dismantle the outrage culture and the rage economy which keep us in a state of perpetual outrage at each other. I'm afraid it won't be, and it will just escalate the anger and paranoia further.

Finally, in the spirit of appreciation, here is a video I saw where I appreciated what he said:

In the press conference, I heard the governor say "we got him" but didn't hear Patel say it.

You really think nobody had any idea who the shooter was until he just walked into the local sheriff's office on his own initiative and confessed? The detective work and pictures circulated by the FBI had nothing to do with it?
