$138M??
Re: $138M??
I don't have a Real ID.
I figure I'm not going to be flying anywhere and I'm not planning on entering a federal building, so why do i need one.

It's not every Federal building, just certain high security buildings like courthouses and military bases.
You won't need a real ID (or any ID) to visit the Smithsonian, any Post Office, or most public-facing offices like Social Security branch offices unless they are in federal buildings that share space with secure facilities like federal courts. And even then, they will just let you in after doing secondary screening.
The alternative is a new national ID like exists in most countries.

I am from Maryland, and here the DMV was pushing it really hard. If you are over a certan age, i think 60, you either go in, or you have to submit a letter from an MD for an eye test.sojourner wrote: ↑Sun Sep 07, 2025 7:25 pmI suppose you aren't from Pennsylvania. Pa was one of the last states to even offer a Real ID. Then Covid happened and it was delayed yet again. I only recently got a Real ID which was my first opportunity to do so. It's not mandatory either. My guess is a lot of Pennsylvanians still don't have a Real ID.Judas Maccabeus wrote: ↑Sun Sep 07, 2025 2:00 pmHe has no driver's license? Most of them are real IDs, since I repeatedly board commercial flights with them.JohnH wrote: ↑Sun Sep 07, 2025 9:27 am Ridiculous for the Feds to claim he’s a flight risk. He hasn’t so far fled anywhere.
You can’t enter a federal building now without a Real ID, so they have to let him hold on to this passport. Maybe the federal government should have rethought their ridiculous ID rules.

In PA you have to choose to get a real ID if you want one, otherwise you get the old kind. If you get your camera card in the mail and go the the DMV Photo Center to get your picture taken and get your new license, it won't be real ID.Judas Maccabeus wrote: ↑Sun Sep 07, 2025 9:46 pmare you sure? If your drivers license has a star on it, it is "real ID.
If you want real ID, you have to get the proof of identity (Birth Certificate, Passport, or whatever) and proof of residency, wait in line for the desk that handles that kind of thing, show your paperwork, pay for the license renewal or the upcharge for RealID. Then if you are at one of the locations that can print RealID's, you can get your license same day. If not, they will mail it to you (they used to just use your old picture from the previous license rather than taking a new picture - not sure if that changed).

Of course it has intrinsic value (To create new gold it is necessary to mine it) unless we define intrinsic value outside of human perception and in that case nothing would have value because the economy is a human creation

If you were the only person on earth, or living a hermit lifestyle and found a gold nugget. What intrinsic value would it have for you? As opposed to say an ordinary rock of the same size?Thomas_muntzer wrote: ↑Mon Sep 08, 2025 4:36 pmOf course it has intrinsic value (To create new gold it is necessary to mine it) unless we define intrinsic value outside of human perception and in that case nothing would have value because the economy is a human creation
While it does have some specialized intrinsic uses in electronics and as radiation shields on satellites and such. The practical uses for gold are rare. Its main value from ancient times onward is decorative and as a medium of exchange. So not really any different from a paper dollar (or digital dollar in your bank account). It is only worth what the market says it is worth.
And it isn't really even that great at that.
