It is no leap at all. Endless studies and analyses have come to that same conclusion.JohnH wrote: ↑Sat Sep 06, 2025 7:09 pmIt’s a rather large leap to give SS credit for all that. If working people didn’t have 15% of their wages stolen from them, then they might have been able to fund their own charitable schemes.Ken wrote: ↑Sat Sep 06, 2025 2:11 pmSocial Security has dramatically decreased the poverty rate among the elderly.
It has also dramatically reduced the poverty rate for dependent children who are orphaned by the death of a parent. About 1.3 orphaned minor children receive survivor benefits from Social Security. And millions more minor children live with and are supported by grandparents who are on Social Security and who are therefore, indirectly clothed, fed, housed, and supported by Social Security.
Are you even trying to argue this point?
Case in point - the Amish don’t participate in SS. They also don’t hav a problem with children whose parents die not being supported, impoverished elderly, or grinding poverty in general.

It's a leap from Mr. Heller, who as far as we know has not applied for Social Security, and seems to be headed toward poverty rather than away from it. Let's get back to the subject of the thread.

At first I thought Grace was delusional, but I'm starting to see it now.Ken wrote: ↑Fri Sep 05, 2025 3:32 pmIf that is the only context then yeah, seems a little gratuitous.Grace wrote: ↑Fri Sep 05, 2025 12:54 pm The Latest news on Daryl Heller, announcing he has been arrested, the link posted by Steve says this:
Daryl Heller's parents and grandparents, nor their church affiliation has anything to do with the choices he made. The filing of federal charges caps a stunning fall from grace for Heller, 55, a Lancaster County native who grew up in a conservative Mennonite family where his father was the pastor of the church that had also been led by his grandfather.
But if his Menno past and connections were part of his affinity scam and he targeted his fraud at the conservative Menno community (as seems to have been the case) then it would be a legitimate part of the news story.

Ridiculous for the Feds to claim he’s a flight risk. He hasn’t so far fled anywhere.
You can’t enter a federal building now without a Real ID, so they have to let him hold on to this passport. Maybe the federal government should have rethought their ridiculous ID rules.Heller will also be on electronic monitoring and must surrender his passport. However, his attorney is permitted to hold onto it until Heller is able to get a Real ID in case he needs to travel elsewhere and such travel would have to be permitted by pretrial services.

Criminals are brought into federal buildings every day without real ID. The lack of an ID won't be any obstacle to trying him in a federal courthouse. Just for getting on an airplane.JohnH wrote: ↑Sun Sep 07, 2025 9:27 am Ridiculous for the Feds to claim he’s a flight risk. He hasn’t so far fled anywhere.

In any event, determining if someone is a flight risk is a criteria-based process. It isn't arbitrary. They look at things like family and employment ties in the community. And whether the person has the financial means to abscond. Heller has burned his ties to the community and has possibly hidden away large sums of ill-gotten gains. So he would likely meet the criteria. They aren't denying him bail, just making reasonable steps to make sure he sticks around.

He has no driver's license? Most of them are real IDs, since I repeatedly board commercial flights with them.JohnH wrote: ↑Sun Sep 07, 2025 9:27 am Ridiculous for the Feds to claim he’s a flight risk. He hasn’t so far fled anywhere.

My wife's isn't a Real ID because she kept renewing it online and never went into the DMV with proof of citizenship to upgrade it to a Real ID. And so now has to carry her passport when flying until she finally bothers to make an in-person appointment to upgrade her license.

I suppose you aren't from Pennsylvania. Pa was one of the last states to even offer a Real ID. Then Covid happened and it was delayed yet again. I only recently got a Real ID which was my first opportunity to do so. It's not mandatory either. My guess is a lot of Pennsylvanians still don't have a Real ID.Judas Maccabeus wrote: ↑Sun Sep 07, 2025 2:00 pmHe has no driver's license?
