I think we can agree this is rather mean-spirited; are there Christians out there who are condemning saying things like this?
There’s much worse circulating. Pray for lost souls.

I remember in school when I was young learning about flash floods and to be very wary of them. In Israel when going on hikes we also we were warned to be very careful in wadis, particularly never in a place in a wadi without a plan to be able to escape it in several seconds (under a minute) and to be alert to hear rushing water/see water coming from either direction.

But I would probably assume I were safe if I were in an RV / camping park near that river... and the same goes for a campground set up for summer campers. Let's hope another survivor is found, like the brave girl who was found who survived by holding on to a tree!
Wife: I was trying to look that story up, and the only thing I could find is the guy who referenced it, but had a picture of a 20 something year old lady who was swept out of her tent at a local campground and climbed up a tree either 12 or 20 miles downstream. Did anyone else see anything else about it? There were some girls who made it into one of the other cabins. It was so horrible because it was where the younger children (8-9) were.

Yes, all I could find is what you found.

A wee little man can’t say, I’m sorry. A big man owns his mistakes and apologizes.
A wee little man trusts himself and his own discernment. A big man is humble enough to know that he needs the counsel and input of others.

Wife: stories like this and the ones from Helene are just terribly sad and scary. We had a lot of flash flood warnings in the area I grew up in the southwest, but I didn’t overly worry about it, and for the most part, it wasn’t an issue unless you were in the mountains. Avalanches and rockslides were more on my radar because of hearing stories from my cousins who did search and rescue in a little mountain town. One of the guys actually got buried in an avalanche while out on the mountain with his dog, and he survived, but lost the dog. it is important though to know that God has our lives in his hands, and doesn’t allow anything to happen without it being part of His plan.

I don’t agree with the notion that whenever something bad happens is that it’s part of God’s plan. I don’t believe that it was part of God’s plan for 88 people in Texas to drown to death. I think bad things happen outside of God’s plan because Creation is fallen and out of alignment with God’s intentions.

I do believe that when bad things happen, God is present with us through Jesus Christ and grieves with us.

Here is a 2011 story about this camp which is called Camp Mystic from the Texas Monthly magazine.

Apparently it is nearly 100 years old and has been the favored spot where the rich and famous of Texas aristocracy have been sending their girls since the 1920s. Even presidents. And they went through a long and brutal legal fight between the various heirs for possession of the place: https://www.texasmonthly.com/articles/t ... y-campers/

Which makes me wonder if some of the young victims are from the wealthy and famous. Not that it ultimately makes any difference, but one wonders.

I don’t know, have been reading Old Testament, God seemed to orchestrate or “allow” so much that would be hard to understand but He was never “absent” in what happens.
His ways are higher than our ways. He has His reasons. Reading through the Old Testament again really makes me realize how aware He is of EVERYTHING

No, you don't know.

There is no dam upstream of these camps. The dam on the Guadalupe (which creates Canyon Lake) is at least 30-40 miles downstream of where these flash floods occurred. And it protects the town of New Braunfels, not these rural summer camps.

To the extent that there was human error it was on the part of the state and county for choosing not to fund any sort of flood warning system for that area even though they knew it was hugely vulnerable.

Also human error on the part of the camp owner (who died in the flood) for not having a better response plan in place and for keeping cabins down on low ground next to the river instead of relocating them on higher ground long ago. This summer camp was a cash cow for the owners (it earned them millions over the years) and they could have done a better job protecting the children in their care.

From what I have learned about camps, they are not cash cows. Ours is not. One does not just move a building with infrastructure attached. We are fortunate because we have rolling hills and we keep to the high ground. Central Taxes is pretty flat land. West Texas starts rolling hills again. Not sure this camp made it to the hills. This is why flash floods hit so hard in Central Texas. Lot of flat land and clay soil which seals with water and does not permeate much water through it once sealed.

It is also like having a mobile home park in a tornado zone. It is fine until the random tornado hits then everyone wonders why they would put a mobile home park right in the line of the tornado. Extreme weather is hard to predict.
