Can’t speak well enough of the Amishvroofers who replaced our 22 yo roof.
Met this one at the Cleveland Home & Garden Show so we had a few estimates by Amish & non.
Huge difference in price between Amish & “English” as they call us.
We finally had the day it was to be done. They were supposed to come at 6:30 a.m. but showed up at 5:50 a.m. and 6 guys totally tore down our old roof & put our new one on and cleaned up by 11:35 a.m. We have a 3 story house due to walk out basement.
I walked out and one of them was fixing a flower that got messed up in the process to which I said “please don’t worry about that!” He replied “we are supposed to leave it better than we found it”.
The father is the owner and not present. He was to come and check the work then get the check. He called & asked if we’d mind getting paid later as he had an opportunity to go fishing on Lake Erie- oh I guess we don’t mind paying later LOL.
Today Mr. Yoder came to inspect & get paid. I complemented him on their work & how hard and focused they worked.
Probably wrong thing to say an Amish man it sounded like a war zone inside the house (hearing what was being done)
Anyone need a roof?

Re: Amish Roofers
A. Yoder Roofing but I’m sure he said “Abe”. Maybe related. Another Amish roofer gave estimate about the same time. Benson Roofing. I mentioned to Mr. Yoder & he said “Oh that’s my cousin. Ben’s son, thus “Benson Roofing”Neto wrote: ↑Mon Jun 23, 2025 8:06 pmWas it Aaron Yoder?Valerie wrote: ↑Mon Jun 23, 2025 7:55 pm Can’t speak well enough of the Amishvroofers who replaced our 22 yo roof.

Seems a lucrative business for those brought up to work like that.
Hm. I just looked at the invoice- Abe lives on Abraham Road in Fredericksburg.

An Amishman and I were discussing various affiliations, and with one in particular he described them as interested mostly in making a lot of money and then going boating on Lake Erie (in their boat they own, with their big truck they also effectively own) to the exclusion of spiritual things. Quite sad.

Valerie, they must not be kin to the ones who took care of your furnace when I was there, right?

Re: Amish Roofers
I don’t doubt it, this one got a call inviting him to go fishing so he didn’t want to pass that up- he caught 4 walleye so having a fish fry for dinner yesterday- a super busy man, they have a lot of mouths to feed. All I know is they did in about half the time for about half the price. Neighbors were amazed.JohnH wrote: ↑Tue Jun 24, 2025 9:04 am An Amishman and I were discussing various affiliations, and with one in particular he described them as interested mostly in making a lot of money and then going boating on Lake Erie (in their boat they own, with their big truck they also effectively own) to the exclusion of spiritual things. I’m going to just toss out there that Amish aren’t fishing in Lake Erie because they have a “lot of mouths to feed”, and he must not be that super busy if he can take an entire day off to go lake fishing an hour and half away.Valerie wrote: ↑Tue Jun 24, 2025 9:34 amI don’t doubt it, this one got a call inviting him to go fishing so he didn’t want to pass that up- he caught 4 walleye so having a fish fry for dinner yesterday- a super busy man, they have a lot of mouths to feed. Just because work is available doesn't mean you actually need hoard it beyond what you need to support yourself and your family. I could take on 2 or 3 extra jobs and spend my every waking life working. But that would make my life worse not better.JohnH wrote: ↑Tue Jun 24, 2025 9:47 amI’m going to just toss out there that Amish aren’t fishing in Lake Erie because they have a “lot of mouths to feed”, and he must not be that super busy if he can take an entire day off to go lake fishing an hour and half away.Valerie wrote: ↑Tue Jun 24, 2025 9:34 amI don’t doubt it, this one got a call inviting him to go fishing so he didn’t want to pass that up- he caught 4 walleye so having a fish fry for dinner yesterday- a super busy man, they have a lot of mouths to feed. So I can respect someone who decides that going fishing with his friends or kids is more important than doing one more job for hire on a nice weekday in June for money he probably doesn't need.

I'm just pushing back on the narrative that all Amish businessmen are some kind of "extra hard workers". Some of them tend to sit around in air-conditioned offices planning their next vacation whilst employees who are paid the minimum the market will bear. And I'm definitely pushing back on the narrative that a Lake Erie fishing vacation's purpose was to "feed their families".
