To shave or not to shave (women's legs)

Christian ethics and theology with an Anabaptist perspective

In the Anabaptist community, is it okay for a consenting lady to shave her legs?

Worse.

Women's razors and replacement blades tend to cost more than men's.
Great news: razors and replacement blades can be purchased which are not specific to men or women.

  • Hair washing was every week or two

The way even conservative Mennonites live today is different from the way their ancestors lived in 1900.

I have seen a source that says the modern articulation of modesty as a detailed lifestyle doctrine, with precise rules about sleeve length, skirt width, etc., also solidified in the 20th century. Is that true?
Conservative Mennonites are mostly composed of people who lived lives that, culturally, reflected prevailing values of the 1930s-1950s, and for whatever reason felt they should preserve those values that were conservative at that time, including in areas such as clothing, men’s hairstyles, vehicle styling, and so forth.

Other plain people felt a need much earlier to stop accepting that innovations and cultural changes from the outside world. People from such backgrounds often won’t see much of a need to adopt present day standards about shaving armpits, legs, facial hair, and so forth. Some groups actively teach there is no need for women to do such things, so no women in such groups do it.

Less-conservative Mennonites often make a mockery of such people.

Likewise the rest of Boot’s list is also more true on plainer groups… and people in such groups don’t really see a problem, nor have a desire to conform outwardly to whatever the current expectations of the outside world or, or what the expectations of conservative Mennonites who are partially conformed to the outside world think. They also do not care if conservative Mennonites make fun of them for having body odor, body hair on their face, armpits, and so on, or mock their hairstyles.

For those who think there is some universal standard of body odor, they should be aware that the “hygeine” business is busy trying to promote the idea of “whole body deodorant”, including using advertising portraying women’s bodies (these are primarily marketed towards women) as fundamentally smelling bad:

Henson. Buy a silver one for yourself, and a Copper one for your wife. Then go remove every offensive hair from your body.

I got some old fashioned razors for a few bucks at yard sales.

The replacement blades run a few bucks for a pack of 10 or 20. The ones I have are Turkish.
