Public schools / sexual predators

Public schools / sexual predators

These cases appear.
Often female abusers, mostly targeting young boys.
They’re sensational, but not discussed on this forum - not to the level churches, scouting, have been.

a few years ago, i recall a case near me, small town public high school.
homosexual male coach. no big headlines.

This is one of the most disturbing cases of alleged sexual abuse by a teacher.

Our children were born in 1977 and 1983.
Even then unwanted behaviors were so common we went ahead and warned our son as much as our daughter about being cautious.
In my day and earlier, folks i knew were far more protective of their daughters than sons! Boys were to be independent and resilient. i admit i felt kinda weird cautioning him.

In retrospect, i’m so glad we did!! No regrets. “Follow your instincts.”
Happy to say, he is independent and resilient. And careful.

Today. wow.
i’m quite uneasy, esp wrt cameras on phones. Literally, it’s impossible to know who has what IN THEIR POCKET.
Predators who are caught typically have THOUSANDS of pictures, videos, etc. AT THEIR FINGERTIPS.
It’s unusual for there to be one victim. It’s almost always many multiples.

It’s impossible to look at any man woman or child and know what they have viewed.

Society has changed. Wrt volume. No new sin or temptation. Vastly increased volume and accessbility.

Boys are different as victims. They get ‘way different messages. They internalize abuse dfferently.
They’re different, they need to be. And they need to be prepared.

Anyway, this is about examples of abuse in public schools.

Please refrain from “nothing to see here”. i know it’s fun. Bunny trails is available.

Sexual predators will always be around children, whether in public schools, with altar boys, at summer camps, youth baseball schools, or in Boy Scouts

The most important thing is to always be alert to any suspicions and, when a child talks about what's happening, believe them and take their words seriously

Regarding the YouTube video you uploaded, this is another argument in favor of homeschooling or schools with very few students. Classrooms with more than 20 students tend to have these types of problems more frequently

Matt Walsh refers to this 2004 study:

K-12 Education:
Selected Cases of Public and Private Schools That Hired or Retained Individuals with Histories of Sexual Misconduct
https://www.gao.gov/products/gao-11-200
.. A 2004 Department of Education report estimated that millions of students are subjected to sexual misconduct by a school employee at some time between kindergarten and the twelfth grade (K-12). GAO was asked to (1) examine the circumstances surrounding cases where K-12 schools hired or retained individuals with histories of sexual misconduct and determine the factors contributing to such employment actions and (2) provide an overview of selected federal and state laws related to the employment of convicted sex offenders in K-12 schools. To identify case studies, GAO compared 2007 to 2009 data employment databases from 19 states and the District of Columbia to data in the National Sex Offender Registry. GAO also searched public records from 2000 to 2010 to identify cases in which sexual misconduct by school employees ultimately resulted in a criminal conviction. GAO ultimately selected 15 cases from 11 states for further investigation. For each case, to the extent possible, GAO reviewed court documents and personnel files and also interviewed relevant school officials and law enforcement. GAO reviewed applicable federal and state laws related to the employment of sex offenders and requirements for conducting criminal history checks.
i admit, this is ‘way beyond what i’d ever imagined.

teachers’ unions are known for keeping the incompetent/corrupt employed.
also, today’s emphasis on all descriptions “sex ed” formally opens doors - promoting and protecting exposure.
foxes and henhouses.

it’s madness to allow materials+behaviors “any random neighbor” would be prosecuted for - into classrooms with bells on!

i agree with Matt. some saw the failure decades ago. far too ignored.

Well no. All unions, not just teachers unions, exist in part to ensure that employees are treated with due process and that allegations are properly investigated and confirmed before teachers are simply fired for no legitimate reason. I have seen teachers covered by unions get fired after allegations of sexual harassment or impropriety. The district simply had to investigate and make sure that the charges were legitimate first. Which some of them are loath to do. I don't know of a single teacher anywhere who wants to work next door to a sexual predator.

Teachers unions don't actually have the power to keep anyone who is corrupt or incompetent employed. School districts do. And sometimes they can't be bothered to properly go through the proper hoops to get rid of someone. What is also often the case is that district administrators simply want to get rid of a teacher who is otherwise a good teacher but there is a personality conflict with an administrator, or they would rather put one of their favorite other teachers into that position. And that is why due process procedures exist. Neither teachers nor teachers unions run schools. School boards and administrators do. And unlike the case with police unions, supervisors can't be a part of the union in public schools.

If school districts wanted to negotiate contracts that were more "at will" in which teachers could be more easily let for for any reason or no reason at all, they would likely have to give up something in return like higher salaries. That is how negotiations work. And they generally don't want to do that. And so in exchange for lower pay, teachers often agree to greater job security and benefits.

i agree, it’s a problem of unions, not just teachers’ unions. i imagine anyone who has been a member of any union has experienced incompetent or corrupt coworkers who are kept on the job, lowering standards and moral of the able and responsible.

another awful example is police unions.
i believe if police who have made shocking headlines were investigated, it’s likely they had histories of being problem emloyees, but were returned to active duty over+over. In the least, they should be reassigned to work they can handle without risk of endangering others.

unions are sacred cows.

to repeat from the past, i’m not against unions per se.
i’m against any human entity that cannot be held accountable. unions demand blind loyalty.
a recipe for disaster.

i hope this doesn’t bunny trail further from the OP.
esp Matt Walsh’s points and questions.

if he is correct, the problem is vastly worse than i imagined.
of course, the general climate has been careening to worse+worse over years.

i’m for questioning of sacred cows. there are so many.

You disagree? Fine. If you are right then it would be easy enough to prove. Find us any school district anywhere in the country where unions are in the chain of command and have veto power over personal decisions related to hiring or firing.

Or alternatively find us any school district union contract that prohibits teachers from being fired for cause. These are all public documents and usually posted to district websites so should be easy to do.

NYC famously has 600 teachers on payroll who don’t teach and the unions make it too hard to fire them.

In context, careering would also be an appropriate word choice.

Yes, that is a 2009 article and while they still have teachers in reassignment awaiting disciplinary hearings and arbitration, they don't do those rubber rooms anymore. If you look into this further you will find that the school district stopped paying the independent arbitrators who had consequently stopped doing arbitration hearings for dismissed teachers so it really had nothing to do the with union but rather the district bureaucracy and in the case of NY the Mayor since decades ago under Giuliani? Or some previous mayor the mayor's office seized control of the public schools. I don't have any personal knowledge of NYC but I do of WA which is also unionized and I've been through it first hand. So I'll make another post dishing the dirt on how things really work.
