It is the largest Christian denomination on the planet by far. With about 1.4 billion baptized members worldwide.
So what the Catholic church does affects the course of Christianity everywhere, for better or worse.

Cardinal Francis wouldn't have to choose a new papal name to provide continuity, just add a roman numeral.
Cardinal Prevost would be uniquely equipped to coach his successors. He would probably get a nice new Popemobile.

Now that’s funny. I wonder how many Western names sound ridiculous to Italians, French and so on?

Re: The Pope to Replace Pope Francis
I identify primarily as a Christian more than a Mennonite. Many Catholics are Christians, also. The Catholics' leader influences many Christians, so I see this as important. Catholics have many social teachings that I and many Anabaptists support, including such things as war, abortion, the death penalty, and care for the poor. So I think a good Catholic leader can help the body of Christ become more faithful.

Yes, about the same population as India and China.
What do you all think? What level of influence and impact in the world does a religious organization like the Catholic Church have, as compared with a civil/national one.

A wee little man trusts himself and his own discernment. A big man is humble enough to know that he needs the counsel and input of others.

Let’s put it this way: there are no civil organizations nor nations from 2,000 years ago still in existence.

I have differences with the Catholic Church but I also know born again, spirit filled Catholics who have differences with me. One thing protestants and especially evangelicals could learn from them is the willingness to be formed by the church. I think they take this to extreme but evangelicals are extreme in expecting the church to cater to their specific tastes and desires.JimFoxvog wrote: ↑Tue Apr 22, 2025 8:02 am I identify primarily as a Christian more than a Mennonite. Re: The Pope to Replace Pope Francis
Today a young college student stopped by our Christian resources table where our campus organization has a table each week. I asked her if she is connected with any campus organizations. She said she is not. Then she volunteered that she had left the Catholic church some time ago. But with Pope Francis's death, she is wanting to connect with her Catholic roots again. So I invited her to join our activities anytime, but then took her over to the front desk and introduced her to a devout Catholic lady who was glad to talk to her. First time I've ever done something like that but it seemed like the right thing to do.
