i saw a bit of Pope Francis yesterday, he didn’t look well. Of course he’s been gravely ill for weeks.
He was present for Easter.

i’ve only paid attention since my daughter married a (non-practicing) Catholic, then they decided to put her in Catholic school, K-3, i think. It was quite a leap for me, i decided to respect their decision, and i do. i learned to be glad for the school, and sad when she was moved to public school. She’s back in C school now for 11+12th grades. Thriving there. (She didn’t want to leave C school to begin.)

In their location, i believe this is best.

i often wonder if she will continue, i have no idea.
one thing, she actually READS the Bible. historically, that has led to new paths. :)

i pray for the Holy Spirit to protect and guide her. i believe He does!

i’m interested in what-all will unfold as the new pope is found.

the pope affects MANY in the world. there will be ripple effects.

i saw a blip of JD with the pope. it was brief.
i’ve wondered how he feels about it. even when expected, death is shocking.

1926-2025 / “Pope Francis has died on Easter Monday aged 88”
“Pope Francis died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88 at his residence in the Vatican's Casa Santa Marta.”

JD told the Pope he "prays for [him] everyday".

I guess per Catholic doctrine, he might as well not stop now?

The death of the pope

Post by Thomas_muntzer »

The Bishop of Rome, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Pope Francis, dies. The first Bishop of Rome of Hispanic American descent.
It is evident that I do not share many things with the late Roman bishop. I could dedicate this post to my criticisms, disagreements, and judgments on these positions, whether religious or political. But I know that such posts will abound in this time: so, I will leave that to others. Furthermore, the same prudence and Christian charity compel me to be conciliatory in the death of any person, even an unbeliever, how much more so in the death of someone who confessed the essential articles of the Apostles' Creed?

What shall I do? I will simply share, word for word, what the Bishop of Rome said regarding the Reformation.

[Begin Quote]
"I think Martin Luther's intentions weren't misguided; he was a reformer. Perhaps some of his methods weren't sound, but at that time... the Church wasn't exactly a model to follow: there was corruption, worldliness, attachment to money and power. And that's why he protested. He was intelligent, and he took a step forward to justify why he did what he did. And today, Lutherans and Catholics, Protestants and everyone else, agree on the Doctrine of Justification: on this very important point, he wasn't wrong.
Luther developed a remedy for the Church, which later consolidated into a state of affairs, a discipline, a way of believing, a way of doing things, a liturgical form. But he wasn't alone: there were also Zwingli and Calvin, and who was behind them? The princes, "cuius regio eius religio." We have to place ourselves in the history of that time, which isn't easy to understand... then things have moved on.
Today, dialogue is very Well, I think the document on Justification is one of the richest and most profound ecumenical documents. There are divisions, but they also depend on the churches... Diversity is what has perhaps done us the most harm, and now we are trying to get back on the path to finding each other after 500 years. I think we have to pray together, pray. This is why prayer is important. Second: work for the poor, the persecuted, for the many people who suffer, for refugees. Work together and pray together. And let theologians study and search together. But this is a long, very long road.
Once, jokingly, I said: "I know when full unity will come." —When? — "The day after the coming of the Son of Man." In the meantime, let us pray, loving one another, and working together."
[End Quote]

Whether you agree with his words or not, this is a much-needed conversation. I recall the words of the Apostle Paul to the Church of Corinth, who in their immaturity and carnality said, "I am of Paul! I am of Apollos! I am of Cephas (Peter)! I am of Christ!" (1 Corinthians 1:12):
"Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and can understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. And though I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing. When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I reasoned as a child. But when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see in a glass dimly, but then face to face. Now we know in part, but then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. And now abide faith, hope, and love, these three; but the greatest of these is love (1 Corinthians 13:1-3, 11-13).
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

I think that is correct. I heard a Catholic on the news today saying that we should pray for Francis.

It looks like Vance converted to Catholicism 6 years ago.

A wee little man can’t say, I’m sorry. A big man owns his mistakes and apologizes.
A wee little man trusts himself and his own discernment. A big man is humble enough to know that he needs the counsel and input of others.

i believe Pope Francis openly requested (the world’s) prayers, soon after becoming pope.
i’m pretty sure the forum topics of that time are not available.

Looks like he’s had health problems for years and had a really bad bout of double pneumonia and was hospitalized a couple months ago.
Pope Francis, 88, died on Easter Monday of a stroke and cardiac arrest, according to an announcement from the Vatican.
Fox News’ Alex Hogan confirmed in an on-air report that the Pope had a stroke in the early morning of April 21, went into a coma and then had a heart attack.
The Pope’s death follows years of ongoing health concerns, including a recent hospitalization for double pneumonia.

I'm surprised he hung on this long. It feels like he had the will to stay alive to see one last Easter Sunday.

Francis had pneumonia 67 years ago and has had lung difficulties ever since. It is amazing he lived as long as he did.
