Today Sunday celebrated the retirement of a very dear preacher and we heard both his personal testimony of coming to Christ and also from others who were contemporary around that time. very interesting and also an enjoyable time of singing

No regular sermon this morning - Eduardo Classen was here again for a Christmas special, playing the harp and giving his testimony of growing up in the Paraguayan Mennonite colony, in spiritual darkness. Then a moving missionary challenge (at least for me, as both a former missionary and a Plautdietsch person).

(We have one other Plautdietsch member in our congregation, from Belize. And SHE actually speaks the language, which I unfortunately do not.)

Sunday December 29 2024 Last Sunday of 2024.

Pilgrim Ministry / GOD'S GIFTS / 37min
Congregation: Leola
Speaker: Sherwin Weaver
https://www.pilgrimministry.org/sermons/gods-gifts
Summary:
People today give each other many gifts over Christmas season. It doesn't take long for the gifts to become broken or forgotten, but God's gifts are eternal and don't become broken or outdated. He gives us love, His Word, family, and many more.
We need to focus more on heavenly things instead of earthly things.

a sermon reminding us that the lord is our healer, and like we go to earthly doctors when we’re sick and need physical help we can go to the Lord and church for spiritual help. Being sick or needing help doesn’t make us think any less of our children so we shouldn’t look down on ourselves when we need to seek spiritual help.

Today’s sermon focused on the theme "Immanuel: God With Us", exploring how this truth shapes our lives and the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves. New Year's is often a time of reflecting on the past year and our hopes for the coming year, and the sermon explored how God's presence impact the way we understand these things.

It had three parts:
  • God With Us in Suffering: God walks with us through pain, loss, and struggles, offering comfort and strength even when life feels overwhelming.
  • God With Us in All of Life: God’s presence is not just for the big, dramatic moments but also for the everyday joys, beauty, and relationships that sustain us.
  • God With Us in Hope and Trust: God’s presence invites us to look forward with open hearts—surrendering our fears, trusting His provision, and embracing the hope He brings for the future.
Throughout, there was an emphasis on how we can be present to each other, as the hands and feet of Jesus.

1. Are we discussing the topic? Good.
2. Are we going around and around in a fight? Let's stop doing that.
3. Is there some serious wrongdoing or relational injury? Let's address that, probably not in public and certainly not for show.

In the sharing time after the sermon, incidentally, the congregation shared about events in their own lives and as a church during 2024, with some really great testimonials. And we shared our hopes for the coming year.

Hang on….are Pilgrim services or messages being regularly posted to the internet? Have they moved that far on the internet issue?

It's a wild ride, isn't it!

Shirksville and Swatara each have their own website with messages regularly uploaded.
My impression would be that the element who would have held back in that regard mostly went with Northeastern.

Not criticizing them for it necessarily - logically if it's a good idea to have business websites and online product catalogs, why not have a church website? Although I have some reservations about regularly posting the sermons online.
