He lasted just a bit more than a year after Rosalynn.

At least he didn't give in to temptation, publicly and shamelessly, as many other politicians have. I appreciate his integrity.

and then deny that he ever did so, another thing many other politicians do, until caught red handed

Those were difficult years when he was president.

i wasn’t following politics, i sensed he did his best.
He accomplished good after, he and his wife doing their best, according to their faith.

i’m perfectly comfortable with an older, wiser, more docile Trump.

LOL- he lusted and lasted after other women, (his dear wife) sorry for that error!

Yes other people while serving our country as president, did give into their temptations. He was honest in admitting he lusted- which Jesus said is already committing adultery in your heart- but he didn’t give in and a great humanitarian. It just irked me that had to bring that up on the news of his death- if I remember right, it was during an interview with Playboy magazine he admitted that. Lessons learned on who you let interview you. Will be a good event to see remaining presidents at his funeral.

Mr Carter was elected as a reaction to the Watergate fallout. I remember it well. America was tired of the relentless media revelations of corruption. Americans wanted a fresh start with a man who had a good heart.

I think the lesson in a review of his life is that sincere Christians don’t really make the best presidents. Mr Carter gave plenty of witness in walking his faith. He can be called a great humanitarian as well. In smaller communities and groups this can be an excellent form of leadership. But when dealing with international conflict politics and economies the better presidents have been American patriots vested in protecting the nation’s people both economically and militarily. They would not make good pastors but they do make good protectors which is needed in this sad old broken world. The Constitution with its guarantees of citizen rights and freedoms would not exist anymore without that strong protection. Totalitarian regimes wanting to conquer our land for its resources would do away with it in order to control our society and especially our religious freedoms. In Russia, China and Vietnam the first community targets for execution or imprisonment were the church leaders and the educators. That history should be taught every year as well as the meaning of The Constitution.

Sorry about the long post. I tried to sum up my thoughts as best I could.

I don't have a theology that tells me how to run government or control nations so I am often at a loss to evaluate such things. Still I see a direct line between the rejection of Carter and his idealism and the national leadership we have currently chosen. The discomfort with Carterism has brought us to where we are. The last two presidents could be seen as anti-Carter choices.

That’s the challenge – does our Christology allow us to participate in the “necessary evil” of secular government, and the moral compromises that it requires? In different ways, I think both Carter and Trump are practical reminders to me of the incompatibility of the God’s Kingdom with the kingdoms of Earth.

This is from 1988. My grandpa in the back behind Carter, uncle in front in the purple sleeveless shirt. At a Habitat for Humanity project.
