Used how? Analyzing what? Compared to what? With what kinds of checking? I think that makes all the difference in the world.

I suppose one way to answer this question is to look carefully at the summaries I provided and identify places where it got things right and wrong. I suspect it's as reliable as many summaries done by human beings, but I bet it also has its flaws. I have identified some myself.

So I would suggest this: respond to the content in this thread based on the content, not based on how it was produced. What did it get right? What did it get wrong?

1. Are we discussing the topic? Good.
2. Are we going around and around in a fight? Let's stop doing that.
3. Is there some serious wrongdoing or relational injury? Let's address that, probably not in public and certainly not for show.

A lot of work time and care? It was generated by ChatGPT in 10 seconds.

No, that's not true. This isn't just "throw a question at ChatGPT and blindly post the answer". It is certainly faster to create summaries with ChatGPT than it is by hand, but doing it well still takes some time and care.

Perhaps on the order of an hour of my time working with ChatGPT. Which is a lot more than I could accomplish in an hour without it.

Request: Could we please return to the subject? I can start another thread on ChatGPT and how I use it for various things if people are interested.

GPT can be a reliable source of information for many types of inquiries, but it has some important limitations to keep in mind:

Strengths:
Wide Range of Knowledge: GPT is trained on a vast range of topics, making it useful for general knowledge, explanations, and educational purposes.
Clear Explanations: It can break down complex ideas into more digestible formats, making it helpful for learning and comprehension.
Updated Information (Until 2021): GPT’s training data includes information up to September 2021, so it’s good for knowledge within that timeframe.

Limitations:
Outdated Information: Since GPT’s knowledge is static and its last update was in 2021, it might not reflect the latest developments or current events.
Not Always Accurate: While GPT strives to provide accurate information, it can sometimes produce incorrect or incomplete answers. Its knowledge comes from patterns in data, not a human-like understanding, so it might make errors.
Lack of Expertise: It lacks the specialized knowledge of experts in fields like medicine, law, or science. For critical or niche topics, consulting primary sources or professionals is important.
No Real-Time Data: It doesn’t have access to the internet for real-time facts, news, or specific queries requiring current data.

Conclusion:
GPT is a good tool for general inquiries, providing basic facts, ideas, and summaries, but it should not be the sole or primary source for highly critical, recent, or expert-level information. Always verify important or specific details using authoritative sources, particularly for health, legal, or technical issues.

OJ's summary is basically correct, but one thing has changed.

I'll let GPT explain:
Bootstrap wrote:Can GPT now do google-like searches and use current web information? Can it summarize content found at a URL?
ChatGPT wrote:Yes, GPT can now perform Google-like searches to access current web information and summarize content found at a URL. Here's how it works:

1. **Web Searches**: I can use a web tool to look up information, including current events, news, and specific queries that require updated or detailed responses.

2. **Summarizing URLs**: If you provide a URL, I can summarize the content of the page. This includes extracting key information or providing a condensed overview of the text.

If you have a specific question or URL you'd like me to explore, let me know, and I can assist you accordingly!

In other words, we need to verify what it says. Some of it will be right, some will be wrong. That's also true of our social media and news feeds. And MN posts. GPT is not a primary source and should not be treated as one.

So in the following thread, I think the relevant question is not whether GPT always gets everything right. The question is this: what did it get right and what did it get wrong?

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=7416

And none of that is raw GPT output without modification. There's a process of teaching GPT, telling it what it got wrong, making sure it focuses on the right things. I edited some of it by hand. If we figure out what it got right and wrong, we can improve it.

Another thought: without GPT, I doubt that any of us would have time to create such an overview in the first place. And I hope that kind of overview is helpful ... it is for me.

I often use ChatGTP to analyze my data or to summarize text that I have copied and pasted. It's really good at this. I also use it as feedback for my writing.

I ask ChatGTP to list sources when I'm asking a question. I've caught it making mistakes.

The reliability of ChatGPT, like other AI language models, is a subject of much discussion and analysis. Here's a balanced view based on available information:

Strengths of ChatGPT:
Language Proficiency: ChatGPT excels in generating human-like text, understanding context, and providing coherent responses. This makes it a useful tool for tasks like drafting content, translations, or answering straightforward queries.

User Interaction: For many users, it can serve as an effective tool for brainstorming, providing feedback, and even educational purposes when used correctly.

Limitations and Concerns:
Accuracy and Hallucinations: ChatGPT can sometimes produce responses that sound convincing but are factually incorrect or outdated. Its training data, while vast, has limitations, including biases and the inability to verify real-time information until recent updates allowed web browsing.

Bias and Misinformation: The model's responses can reflect biases present in its training data. There's also the risk of it generating misleading or false information, known as "hallucinations," especially on topics where it has less data or where the information is nuanced.

Dependence on Prompt Quality: The reliability of ChatGPT's responses heavily depends on the quality and specificity of the prompts given. Vague or poorly constructed questions might lead to unreliable or off-target answers.

User Experiences and Opinions:
Some users find ChatGPT helpful for specific, well-defined tasks where they can verify the output, like code writing or idea generation. However, there's a consensus among both users and experts that its answers should be fact-checked, especially for critical applications or when seeking factual information.

There are concerns about its use in sensitive areas like healthcare or education where accuracy is paramount, with studies showing mixed results on reliability in these fields.

Continuous Improvement:
OpenAI has made efforts to improve ChatGPT's reliability, including updates for more current information access and user control over outputs. Yet, the model's fundamental nature as a predictive text generator means it will always require human oversight for factual accuracy.

In conclusion, while ChatGPT can be a valuable tool for many applications, it should not be solely relied upon for factual accuracy without verification. Its reliability is context-dependent, and users are advised to cross-reference information, especially for important or sensitive topics.
