It’s a gift in leadership, management, to match the right person with the right job. Then to let them do it.

i’m perfectly comfortable with an older, wiser, more docile Trump.

I agree with this. Yes, it would cause massive pain and upheaval. But so be it. It would be temporary, and mistakes would be made. But the mistakes could eventually be corrected for the most part, and the country would probably be much healthier and further ahead five or ten years later.

unlike Congress, Musk might be capable of grasping what $1 trillion is.R7ehr wrote: ↑Tue Oct 15, 2024 12:25 pmI agree with this. Yes, it would cause massive pain and upheaval. But so be it. The actual job you are all talking about is Director of the Office of Management and Budget which is the executive branch agency responsible for developing the President's budget proposals to Congress and auditing spending and management effectiveness of Federal agencies.R7ehr wrote: ↑Tue Oct 15, 2024 12:25 pmI agree with this. OMB Director is a Senate-confirmed political appointment and were Musk to take the job, Federal conflict of interest standards would REQUIRE that he step down from all of his day jobs as CEO of SpaceX, Starlink, Tesla, and probably X since all of those companies are either direct Federal contractors (SpaceX, Starlink, and Tesla) or directly affected by government regulation and policy (X). So to take the job of OMB director, Musk would need to step down from all of his current businesses and recuse himself from any business decisions at any of those companies.
In any event, the president and executive branch are not in control of Federal spending. Congress is. So someone like Musk might be able to make a lot of noise about stuff, but any changes in Federal spending or Federal programs would need to happen in Congress, not the executive branch. The president can propose Federal budgets which happens every year presidential budgets are usually treated as DOA in Congress which starts over from scratch and does its own thing. Lately Congress hasn't even been doing that and has just rolled over previous years budgets as continuing resolutions.
There is no Federal budget czar who can just go slash and cut budgets. No one has that authority and the president can't just make up a position and grant them that authority. All the president can do is make recommendations to Congress.
In any event, most of the Federal budget is non-discretionary. Programs like Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, etc. And the president has no authority to change them absent Congress.

I’m not really talking about any job. I’m sharing a 30,000 foot sentiment. I don’t actually believe Trump has the interest in doing any fiscally responsible actions at all. And I don’t think Musk would last a week in any Federal job.Ken wrote: ↑Tue Oct 15, 2024 12:56 pmThe actual job you are all talking about is Director of the Office of Management and Budget which is the executive branch agency responsible for developing the President's budget proposals to Congress and auditing spending and management effectiveness of Federal agencies.R7ehr wrote: ↑Tue Oct 15, 2024 12:25 pmI agree with this. And I'm just pointing out that part of living in a Constitutional democracy is that we are a nation of laws not dictators or czars. And our Constitution puts Congress in charge of the nation's purse strings, not the president.R7ehr wrote: ↑Tue Oct 15, 2024 1:03 pmI’m not really talking about any job. Most of what people complain about when it comes to Federal spending is the purview of Congress not the president. There are a whole lot of changes that could and should be made to Congress to make it operate better and more efficiently. I would be in 100% agreement with that. Starting with abandoning the filibuster. But for any conversation about spending, Congress should be the focus of discussion, not some theoretical budget czar appointed by the president who would have zero power and authority.

Philosophically I'm not convinced this is a good idea. All the money that is spent has been allocated by the elected voice of the people. Putting a spending czar over their decisions with power to override their decisions seems rather anti- democratic. Imagine someone with that power from a party you dislike.

Whether or not it is a good idea, it is blatantly unconstitutional. And would be quickly struck down by the courts.barnhart wrote: ↑Tue Oct 15, 2024 1:26 pm Philosophically I'm not convinced this is a good idea. I think they are more talking about finding the $1000 toilets and a lot of other fraud charged to the government.
