Fall 2024 Flower Garden Plans?

Post by the-real-steve »

The last of my fall bulbs have arrived. I will be trying some different perennials in pots this fall for spring blooming. Pretty excited about that challenge. Apparently I don't know to read and have way more bulbs than intended, but I will find somewhere to go with them!

Feel free to share your fall plans!

I have pansies out in a pot which sill bloom some this fall, wee bit over the winter and in the spring be ready to bloom full on. The chrysanthemum I had in a pot last year I planted last fall and it is gorgeous this year and huge.
No more bulbs and not ready to replant/transfer any.
Are your bulbs tulips, daffodils, crocuses or????

Yes.

We had about 20 cannas in pots and I am looking forward to dumping them and harvesting the bulbs. We had an orange canna that did quite well, not something you see every day.

Also have some Hostas on the way.

My wife wants tulips

Any suggestions on where to order tulip bulbs and when to plant them?

I know I can google but I assume there is some collective wisdom here too.

Ken, one thing I learned the hard way- tulips like a cold winter- so you may get a good first year but each year less and less reappear. I know a good bulb place out in the east- VA- but not sure about the west coast.

Orange cannas sound really neat.

I have lots of daffodils, different colors and from early to late season. Love love love daffodils.

I don't have any heavy bulbs, only light ones.

Avoid Home Depot for stuff like this. I have always ordered online from reputable outfits and have never been burned: Brecks, Eden Brothers are sure winners. Just got a shipment from Holland Bulbs for the first time, always heard good things.

If you're gonna order tulips, get on it this weekend yet. This past year I ordered my fall bulbs in August. I have my eye on another variety of canna bulbs for next spring and I will be pre-ordering as soon as the website will let me.

90%+ of my gardening is in containers (various reasons) and I take that stuff seriously if you haven't noticed!

The wife and I are going to visit some locally owned nurseries today and see what they have on offer. Then I guess if we don't find what she wants, we will navigate the overwhelming options at Holland Bulbs or another online site.

Do you plant your container bulbs in the fall as well? Or transplant them into pots in the spring?

I’ve gotten them from Breck’s and K.van Bourgondien.

West of the Cascades daffodils seem to do better than tulips, East side, tulips do better than daffodils. Daffodils like the moisture. Tulips like the cold.
Mice/voles will eat tulip bulbs, but they won’t eat daffodil bulbs.

This fall. First time doing this. I am told plant the pots and set them on the back porch with a cover on top to keep the critters from digging them up. Water once a month to imitate normal precipitation.

I have also read that folks but their bulbs in the fall and keep them in the veggie drawer of the fridge over the winter to get them to "reset". Again, I am told they need at least 8 weeks of cold to make them dormant

Good luck, Ken.
