I.P. Address Question

Post by R7ehr »

Does every device on a network have it's own number?

If I connect to wifi with my phone does that generate a different number than if I am online with the same phone using 4-5G?

If I connect to a different wifi network, does my phones I.P. address change?

Yes. Every device on a network has a unique IP address. Some devices may have more than 1 IP address if they have multiple connections to the same network.

Yes, because in both cases your phone is connecting to a different network. Each network has its own IP addressing and leasing scheme, so you get a new IP address each time you connect to a different network.

Depends if you mean your public IP address or local IP address on the network. Every device on a network will have its own IP address on the network for internal network purposes but all devices on the network will (probably) share the same public IP to access the internet. That will be different than the IP your phone uses for cell service. If you connect to another network it will be assigned a different local IP address for that network and it will use that network’s IP address on the internet.

Router does NAT or network address translation. It generally does this seamlessly.

And if I connect with, say, a public WiFi, then a day or thirty later I connect again, will the I.P. Number be the same? They don’t regenerate?

Very few addresses are static. Most are dynamic from a range. Usually the first 3 numbers are static to area or provider. The last is dynamic and will change each log in.

IP addresses leases usually don’t last more than a day by default and leases on public wifi should be much less.
