Years ago we were friends with an experienced registered nurse, her daughter was about to graduate from nursing school.
Our friend was very bothered by what she saw in her daughter’s education.
She was troubled, saying, “What are they telling students in college these days?!”
She was worried that students are being told they’re fabulous, and should expect to start at THE TOP of their fields, not to be entry level and ready to work and learn. This really bothered her.
Our daughter was a bit younger, her degree was in ag communications, but, honestly, i sensed similar.
Her degree wasn’t technical or special, yet, when she graduated, she expected to begin as a CEO - of anything she chose!
That didn’t happen.
We counseled her she might want to add to her ed, get additional certifications, or other, to her “basic” degree.**
Any degree is an accomplishment. However, they’re not all equal wrt employment opportunities.
Our friend was bothered that she wondered if students were encouraged with big fantasies, to keep them motivated and paying big tuitions? Valid question.
**Basic degrees. Huge change from when we graduated HS.
At that time, a HS diploma prepared graduates to find gainful employment, marry, raise families, buy a small house, etc.
At that time, ANY degree pretty much guaranteed better employment, higher income.
No more. Now many degrees are basic with no guarantee of employment.
So, these eager young ladies in corporate marketing doubtless have big ideas about their worth.
All they have to do is say it to make it so.
Then reality settles in.
i did not foresee a time when “white college educated liberal women” would become their own demographic.
i’m reading these words. (i don’t think it’s limited to white.)
