Are you ironically using “right wing” as a slur while accusing them of using “woke” as slur or are you just not that self-aware?Ken wrote: ↑Wed Aug 07, 2024 9:35 pmThe actual hijacking of language that is going on here is on the part of the right which has hijacked an obscure term "woke" and turned it into an slur against any random thing they don't like on the left that they don't like but can't quite define. The term has the added advantage of sounding racial without being overtly racist.
It is effective, I'll give them that. But it will fade away like CRT already has because it doesn't actually really mean anything specific.
Has America's culture of "wokeness" effected the Anabaptists?

My point was, that is an insufficient definition.Ernie wrote: ↑Wed Aug 07, 2024 9:16 pmOn its face, the definition looks harmless and even praiseworthy.barnhart wrote: ↑Wed Aug 07, 2024 5:07 pmBy this definition it would be in line with a long tradition of Christian social action from Abolition, bans on Sati and foot binding, medical care for the poor and the erection of hospitals, sugar boycotts to strangle the slave trade ECT...steve-in-kville wrote: ↑Wed Aug 07, 2024 10:07 am Forgot the definition of being woke:
The quality of being alert to and concerned about social injustice and discrimination.
One of the four corners of Bebbington's quadrilateral of evangelical faith is action, a rejection of passivity in the face of suffering. As the famous Menno Simmons quote says "True evangelical faith cannot lie sleeping..."
The difference with 21st century "wokeness" is that it turns goodness into political posturing, and without a moral foundation, it defends and justifies immoral behavior which the Bible condemns.

I think "right wing" is thrown about casually to paint center right and far right the same color. One way to combat this would be for the center right to separate from the far right and draw clear lines. As long as the center right defends Unite the Right rallies and ideas like NETR and Theonomy, they open themselves to be dismissed with broad brush attacks.HondurasKeiser wrote: ↑Thu Aug 08, 2024 6:56 amAre you ironically using “right wing” as a slur while accusing them of using “woke” as slur or are you just not that self-aware?Ken wrote: ↑Wed Aug 07, 2024 9:35 pmThe actual hijacking of language that is going on here is on the part of the right which has hijacked an obscure term "woke" and turned it into an slur against any random thing they don't like on the left that they don't like but can't quite define. Is it possible the greatest influence of the current cultural progressive movement on Anabaptists will be the reaction against it, the absorption of the attitudes and mindset of the anti-"woke" movement.

From where I sit, this seems to be a real possibility.

Because I'm me, I looked up the origins of "Social Justice Warrior." The term emerged in the 90s and was considered a neutral or positive descriptor. That changed in the 2010s when the term was used as a pejorative on Twitter, especially during the Gamergate controversy and the emergence of the online "alt-right."steve-in-kville wrote: ↑Thu Aug 08, 2024 5:11 amFollowing that same train of thought, what would have social justice warriors (SJW) have been referred to?
(Not disagreeing with you)

I agree that "far-right" and "right-wing" can be used as a slur, but they are also categories on the political spectrum. This is why I've asked about definitions for "far-right" in other conversations. Drawing lines is difficult because there have been deliberate efforts to mainstream far-right ideas, such as the "Great Replacement" conspiracy theory. So what I've observed is that some ideas and perspectives that were considered "far-right" have been filtering into center-right.barnhart wrote: ↑Thu Aug 08, 2024 8:29 amI think "right wing" is thrown about casually to paint center right and far right the same color. Kind of like how the center-left plays footsie with the woke. Biden is not woke, Harris is not woke but they also can’t bring themselves to disavow or criticize folx to their left.barnhart wrote: ↑Thu Aug 08, 2024 8:29 amI think "right wing" is thrown about casually to paint center right and far right the same color. Which center-right people are you thinking of? I read and listen to a number of conservative thinkers that want nothing to do with the far right and are very vocal about it.

Yes, the center left has the same problem. Exhibit A would be the reluctance to call out anti semitism on the left.
