It’s this painting that’s being referenced—

I think it's just damage control. Sponsors have been pulling out because of it. I've heard the title let's the cat out of the bag:
"Sponsors" plural?

As far as I can tell from the news reports, the only company doing so or threatening to do so is C-Spire, a small telecommunications company from Mississippi which can't have had very much in the way of Olympics advertising to begin with. Since their only market is Mississippi and a corner of Alabama and Tennessee. So it's not like they are a national or international advertiser. Probably only advertising on local market NBC stations in Mississippi.

Which is just a performative thing since it would have exactly ZERO effect on the Olympics and probably not even the local NBC affiliates either if all they are doing is switching their advertising from Olympic to non-Olympics coverage.

They're described as a "major" sponsor in this and other articles:

That's a right-wing tabloid from the UK and the article doesn't describe them as a "major sponsor". The headline writer does. It reads like a transcribed press release. All the other articles seem to just be a reprint of this one. For all you can tell from the article they might only have had $500 worth of local ads running during the Olympics anyway.

Like I said, C-Spire is a local telecom company from Mississippi that only really serves the Mississippi market. According to their web site they have one store in Alabama and the rest are in Mississippi. How "major" of a sponsor can they actually be? Has anyone here even heard of C-Spire before? I haven't. They are not a national brand much less an international brand.

For those of you confused, the title of the opening ceremonies of the Olympics was literally called "La Cène Sur Un Scène Sur La Seine," i.e. "The Last Supper on a Stage on the Seine." Any questions?
Source? I’m seeing social media posts claiming that but not anything from a news source.

I can't read the full article because it's behind a paywall, but the first (translated) paragraph says the following --
It was one of the highlights of the opening ceremony, this Friday, of the Paris Olympics: the tableau entitled "Festivity", where we discover around a DJ console a group including several famous drag queens (Nicky Doll, Paloma and Piche), in an attitude that, for some viewers, was interpreted as an evocation, not of the "Feast of the Gods", as the designers claimed, but more so of the "Last Supper", Jesus' last meal with the apostles before his arrest.

Yea I'm not claiming it was titled "The Last Supper" - it was just a news source that used the phrase.

For a period of time paganism was disfavored in Europe and the Americas with "respectable" people at least paying lip service to Christianity or humanism. This Olympic display is a jarring reminder that the arc of history is once again bending toward an embrace of hedonism, paganism, and the rejection of all that is Godly.

Gotcha. Searching for the phrase "La Cène Sur Un Scène Sur La Seine," brought up a few French news sources that used the phrase (or part of the phrase) in the headline, but in the articles stated that the scene was called "Festival." I wonder if "La Cène Sur Un Scène Sur La Seine" is a nickname given to the tableau in the press. It's actually a great pun because Cène, Scène and Seine are all pronounced the same in French.

Incidentally, Jolly has not confirmed that the painting "Festival of the Gods" is his inspiration even as he's denied that it's a parody of "The Last Supper." Yet, as I pointed out earlier, the themes of the tableau are consistent with the symbolism of other Renaissance art depicting Greco-Roman paganism.

It is actually the exact opposite of that. The actual Olympics (the competitions) are among the most ascetic pursuits in the modern world. Most Olympic sports are not big money and athletes have to train for years in complete dedication to their sport for any hope of success and perhaps a small moment of fame every 4 years. My daughter goes to school with some of the Olympic rowers. They basically have no life outside of rowing and school.

It is just the opening ceremonies that are a spectacle and that is really more about the host city than the Olympics themselves. Every host city does its own opening ceremonies. The Olympics doesn't really have any say or control. Paris did their thing to apparently mixed reviews. I only watched a small part of it and it was kind of hard to follow. I didn't see the part that generated the controversy. All I saw was the guy running over rooftops with the torch and the boats bringing in the athletes.
