One of my pet peeves. Of course if the liquid content is high enough, it doesn't really qualify as chili, so it might as well be called soup.

Just don't go to Texas. They will have a conniption if it has beans in it. Correct Texas chili is meat and chili peppers only with maybe onions, garlic and other spices but no tomato. And not hamburger either but shredded meat like chuck roast. Putting beans in chili is sacrilege.ohio jones wrote: ↑Thu Jun 13, 2024 2:09 pmOne of my pet peeves. And don’t forget the distinction between green chili and red chili in Colorado and New Mexico.Ken wrote: ↑Thu Jun 13, 2024 5:03 pmJust don't go to Texas. I suppose spaghetti and cheddar are totally out of the question. Cincinnati people would say "no Way!"Ken wrote: ↑Thu Jun 13, 2024 5:03 pmJust don't go to Texas. Wife: cheeseburger chowder, and cheesy ham and broccoli soup. Probably the favorite though would be New England clam chowder with french fries or crackers or bread, and throw in salmon or whatever.

If I had to guess I would attribute it to the Mexican roots. Chili with meat and beans is not a Mexican dish. In Mexico beans would be a separate side dish and stewed meat would be served separately with tortillas. Mexican cuisine has all variety of stewed meat dishes but none of them include beans.Soloist wrote: ↑Thu Jun 13, 2024 10:30 pmWife: i’m guessing that the root of this infidelity is economics. we get some pretty beany chili at our house.Ken wrote: ↑Thu Jun 13, 2024 5:03 pmJust don't go to Texas. Chili is actually a Texan dish out of San Antonio and not Mexican. In Mexico they would call similar dishes carne guisada or barbacoa or any of a variety of other stewed meat dishes. None of which contain beans. But they would be served with beans on the side.
