The Army Corp. of Engineers is coordinating this, with the Coast Guard dealing with the Maritime aspects of it. They work well together.

Rebuilding the bridge will be another story. That was part of the major Hazmat route up and down the east. This is forcing a diversion across the north loop of the Beltway. It is a mess, and it impacts me coming home from school/church.Thee is a lawsuit brewing that has the possabilaiy of holding the whole thing up until they resolve the "name" issue. Let's hope they throw that one out before it delays things.

Here in Baltimore, we have been condemned to four more years of "Wokeist" government at the city level. Let's hope it does not flow over to the state/federal managers of this project.

Out of curiosity, do you have a link for that? All I've been able to find are articles about the lawsuit that the city of Baltimore is filing against the owners of the Dali.

CORRECTION: There are groups pushing to not name the replacement bridge after Francis Scott Key, but I'm not seeing anything about a lawsuit or holding up construction of the bridge...yet.

Stay tuned. The whole issue is “standing.” This sort of thing is becoming routine here. There is also a lawsuit and investigation about the much needed train tunnel replacement, since it goes under “communities of color” without their permission. Most likely will be settled for money.

The Frederick Douglass tunnel project sounds like NIMBYism with a civil rights dimension. I think you're right that it will be settled with money.

In fairness, Amtrak has used Eminent Domain in court to seize land for the project from landowners in those communities.

Is there a reason that a train tunnel that goes UNDER people's communities is a problem?

I would think it kind of depends on how it is constructed.

If it is a shallow "cut and cover" type of tunnel then we are talking about perhaps half a decade of severe disruption of a community and lots of eminent domain seizures of properties and so forth.

If it is a deep bored tunnel then the cost goes way up but the surface impacts are more minimal.

It is two of the ventilation and escape shafts they claim will expose the neighbors to harmful fumes, from the diesel locomotives.

However, the tunnel will be able to accommodate electric trains only, and no freight.

It is simply a shakedown for money. However, Biden’s DOT is launching an investigation.

It is a driven tunnel, using a boring machine. It is the ventilation structures as well the “we were not consulted “ line, in spite of meetings that have gone on for a five year period. I heard Al Sharpton is involved, so it is almost certainly a shakedown for cash.

And then we see the real reasons we don't have better public transportation in America.. any project like this gets a serious shakedown for cash. The money gets spent on endless lawsuits, and the actual project doesn't get built.

As they must. The only way to get a tunnel through is by eminent domain.

They will be required to use all electric locomotives, and be passenger only, so significant concessions have been made. A cash shakedown is all that remains.
