This week is the first time that I ever remember seeing a woman with her head totally covered. Muslim, of course, here in South Africa. Not even eyes visible.

But I've had a number of Muslims accept tracts from me. May God bring light into their souls.

I have a new line in the townships if someone says no to the pretty tract. I widen my eyes and say, "But I came all the way from America to give this to you!" Usually they smile, and sometimes they take it. One lady asked me, somewhat irritated, who will I go to there in Mfuleni, if I get robbed? I explained that I visit different townships, and don't have time to stop and introduce myself to people. But she and I parted with a hug. Another woman flat out told my sister-in-law that we shouldn't be there because it isn't safe. However, safety lies in being in the will of God.

Another first--handing to a circle of policemen, then a few seconds later, one carrying an assault rifle (I think).

Try hard not to offend. Try harder not to be offended.
I think I am funnier than I really am.

Today we had the MCC Great Lakes IVEPers* join us for worship at Willow Springs Mennonite Church. They held a retreat at nearby Hungry World Farm.

There were 9 volunteers from South America, Africa, and Korea. Each told a little about themselves and they presented a couple songs, one in Spanish and the other in Swahili. We did get rough translations. They joined us for a potluck afterward.

Another notable event today is that we finally were able to send out about 1000 pounds of squash to the River Bend Foodbank.

Almost half of what we grew in about a 60' x 120' patch we recently reclaimed from brush. Free seeds--just saved from last year--and very little work to grow.

... and very nutritious and delicious!

One year we planted 2 butternut squash plants in our little garden. All I needed was enough to provide about 22 pints to can for pies. Those two plants provided enough for two years. On a different note, one year a friend gave us paw paws, something I was completely unfamiliar with. I peeled them and removed their huge stones. They didn't provide a lot of pulp, but what it yielded, was enough to make a pie using my pumpkin pie recipe. It turned out delicious. I lessened the sugar as paw paws are naturally sweet.
