Just keep in mind Ken, there is a reason American tactics target the leadership in insurgency.
A good leader can change pretty much everything you listed.
Key word is can, not will. They have to be fully supported to carry out these sort of changes but when you look through history, a bad general loses despite superior weapons or numbers.

Yes but the Russian invasion isn't an insurgency.Soloist wrote: ↑Sat Sep 02, 2023 5:21 am Just keep in mind Ken, there is a reason American tactics target the leadership in insurgency.

It is a modern conventional war in which logistics reign supreme. Modern combined arms tactics requires immense logistics and training. From what I have read, that is where Russia is coming up short. Most conventional wars are fought with large units. The basic combat unit in the American army is the combat brigade which is about 4,000 men that includes infantry, armor, artillery, aircraft, communications, and logistical support that are all trained to operate jointly in support of each other. It doesn't matter what kind of general you put in charge if the troops don't know how to work together and don't have experienced noncoms and junior officers who can make it all work. That is why NATO armies have huge training grounds where they send whole brigades to train and practice together, and whey they do even larger wargames and such.
Russia has basically bled through all their experienced units in the first year of the war and is now just dumping raw raw conscripts or convicts with little or no training into front line units where they are little more than cannon fodder or static defensive pieces. So they can spread vast numbers of mines and dig trenches to defend static positions which they are doing. But they can't do much to push forward and conquer new territory now that Ukraine has its act together militarily.
Modern conventional war is also extremely heavy. Russia is an artillery heavy army. The average artillery gun needs about 2 truckloads of ammo per day. And Russian artillery is mostly self-propelled on tracks so they need tanker loads of diesel every day as well because the guns run off diesel engines to aim and shoot. So they need massive quantities of trucks and massive supply depots to keep it all going which the Ukrainians are growing increasingly adept at destroying. At the start of the war Russia had overwhelming advantages in equipment and manpower. Those advantages are largely gone now
Changing leadership doesn't change any of that basic math. They problems go much deeper than that. And corruption is also bleeding the Russian military dry as supplies get bled off for profit or never existed in the first place except on paper.
I mean I'm no great military expert. But that is the gist of what I have picked up doing lots of reading and follow of those who are. Such as retired generals who post on twitter.

When I asked my grandmother, who was born in the Ukraine, for her recipe for borshch, she looked at me seriously and said,
“Well, first, you go out into the garden and see what is ready." This was extremely authentic borshch.

Re: Russia Invades Ukraine 2022
With Gaza in the news, Ukraine has kind of faded from the headlines.
But here is an interesting article from a Russian political scientist arguing that Putin doesn't want any end to the war. That a state of war is politically beneficial to Putin's government regardless of whether they are winning or losing (and losing might even be better) since it allows them to squelch dissent and divert attention from their domestic policy failures. Food for thought.
The original discussion is in Russian, this is an English summary.

He has already taken the opportunity to use the war as justification to disappear officials he found inconvenient.

Re: Russia Invades Ukraine 2022
What it also means is that peace negotiations with Russia may be pointless if there is no desire on their part to end the war. If Russia has no interest in negotiating in good faith then nothing will be achieved. All capitulation may achieve if Russia desires endless war is simply move the future front lines of the war further west.
The only way to bring the war to any sort of conclusion may simply be to isolate Russia and the Russian economy enough so that their economy no longer has the capacity to support modern war. And that will be a long process.
