This isn't about Biden or the Biden Administration either. Israel is a grown-up country. They are not the 51st State. This is really about the complete failure of the Netanyahu government to manage security. Netanyahu has been too busy waging a culture war within Israel and against the professional military that was opposing his power grab in the courts. This is also about Netanyahu's focus on using the Israeli military to support settlement policies in the West Bank. The article above cited by Grace [which has been moved to Politics] criticizing the Biden Administration for ignoring Hamas should really be directed at Netanyahu and his government.

Israeli security leaders had played down the threat from Hamas in recent months, as the group abstained from conflicts started by its smaller ally in Gaza, Palestinian Islamic Jihad. There was a sense that Israel, with its Iron Dome air defense systems, had rendered ineffective Gaza’s main threat of short-range rockets.

Last month, the Israeli military confidently characterized Gaza as being in a state of “stable instability,” suggesting that the dangers posed by Hamas militants were largely contained.

Recent Israeli intelligence assessments of Hamas were that the militant group had shifted its focus to trying to stoke violence in the West Bank and that it was looking to avoid launching major attacks from Gaza in an effort to avoid the kinds of punishing Israeli military responses that have devastated the isolated area in the past.

Why the focus on the West Bank? The violence they are talking about in the West Bank is guarding against potential violence against Israeli settlers who are guilty of stealing Palestinian lands. And so, on the eve of this Hamas invasion we have the Netanyahu government focusing its military and security apparatus on propping up settler policy in the West Bank instead of defending against Hamas:

The reason for the focus on the West Bank is Netanyahu, to get his coalition to bring him to power, made deals with the settler and ultra-reglious parties, forcing him to pin down lots of resources there, to support settler expropriation of land they are not entitled to, and to protect the settlers in their efforts to drive Palestinians from their land. There is no compromise with people who say that "god gave me the land you have been living on for generations, and we are willing to use violence to force you off."

If you want to actually measure "worst"

This attack is not even rounding error compared to the current attack that Russia is making on Ukraine that is leveling and exterminating entire cities.

And we have Russians all over the place doing the same exact thing, gleefully cheering genocide and death in flag waving demonstrations across Europe.

The common thread is that both Hamas and Russia seem to be allied in their hatred of the west and both are supported by Iran.

I don't understand why Hamas/Iran does this? What do they think they will gain?
