Life with no chance of parole apparently.

Sounds like the lack of a motive being revealed is part of what caused the judge to deliver such a harsh sentence. I don’t think Gooch has ever admitted to wrongdoing. Lack of repentance and dishonesty has likely cost him the chance of ever being free again.

Gooch expressed no emotion when Coconino County Superior Court Judge Cathleen Brown Nichols handed down the sentence. Brown Nichols said the case was one of the most senseless she's handled and was perplexed by a motive that never was revealed.

He’s a cold hearted murderer. And it feels strange that those words are not one iota an exaggeration, and are hyperbole free.mike wrote: ↑Wed Jan 19, 2022 9:54 pm Life with no chance of parole apparently.

I don’t get why his father asked for leniency. I know it would be heart wrenching to have your son be a murderer, but if he was lying and unrepentant about it, how could you ask for leniency?RZehr wrote: ↑Wed Jan 19, 2022 10:16 pmHe’s a cold hearted murderer. .“And so as the sentencing is pronounced we just pray for your leniency on it that Mark may return to society and be a contributing member to society,” said Mark Gooch’s father, Jim

Gooch's attorney says they will appeal.
His attorney argued for a life sentence with the possibility of parole also stated they will appeal.

extreme broken hearts. i think it’s the more typical response.mike:

when parents accept+submit to harsh penalties for their children, even adult children, it makes headlines. have you noticed?
those who haven’t been immersed in a culture that specifically values personal accountability, the current general view is,
if you can get away with (anything) legally, do it.
courtroom theater. lawyers are trained for it.
i noticed a significant legal+cultural turn in this direction after WJC was in office.
(i think) it’s wise to keep in mind, nearly EVERYTHING that happens in courtrooms is a DIRECT result of legal counsel.
when defendants are reported to have “no emotions,” etc., it’s VERY likely they were deliberately counseled to do so.
it’s very possible MG had plenty of emotion, plenty to say, but was restrained by his lawyer.
in certain cases, some defendants will break out with words/emotions regardless of counsel. i suspect this is infrequent.
so, again, the public doesn’t really know. there is no real way to know what MG is about.
all that’s known is what is reported.
APPEALS are now so common. Verdicts+sentencing aren’t the end they used to be, just the beginning of litigation.
(i’ve read) appeals for death sentences are automatic. thankfully, i don’t know very much about any of this.
but i notice the Christian perspective is missing in courtrooms. personal accountability is passe’.
litigation = $$$$ legal job security.
i would not be surprised if MG is free again, possibly within a few years.
i imagine MG and his family are being counseled in this direction.

if Nixon had been president after WJC, it’s unlikely he would have resigned. (old school)

Gooch is currently an inmate at Arizona’s Eyman Prison. According to his parents, he has turned to religion while behind bars—though it’s unclear exactly which Christian denomination he’s embraced.
Despite his actions, Mennonites in the community Gooch targeted have not turned their backs on him.
“I’m sure in this circle of churches that they regularly pray for him,” Burdge says. “I can imagine there will be people that will pray for him until the day he dies.”

A close examination of Gooch during his interrogation.

This is why it isn't always the "Christian" thing to do to not turn people over to law enforcement or press charges. Mark Gooch got away with many lesser crimes because the "nice" people he victimized wouldn't let the law take its course.
