Poor people are definitely at a substantive legal disadvantage. And Black people have 7 times less the wealth on average.justme wrote: ↑Sun Aug 13, 2023 5:23 pmi think your question was answered before you asked it.joshuabgood wrote: ↑Sun Aug 13, 2023 5:18 pmIt is more accurate to say African Americans are charged and convicted of more crimes per capita than white people. That fails to explain why the crimes are committed in the first place though.joshuabgood wrote: ↑Sun Aug 13, 2023 5:37 pmPoor people are definitely at a substantive legal disadvantage. Being at a legal disadvantage doesn’t cause young people to go out and murder other people.

No it doesn't...but it explains why convictions and arrests (and the death penalties) are higher for poor people.Josh wrote: ↑Sun Aug 13, 2023 10:51 pmThat fails to explain why the crimes are committed in the first place though.joshuabgood wrote: ↑Sun Aug 13, 2023 5:37 pmPoor people are definitely at a substantive legal disadvantage. It is entirely reasonable to be concerned with one’s own safety (or especially one’s family, children, wife, young people entrusted to your care and so on) and choose you don’t want to put them in harm’s way and expose them to violent criminals. In fact, I would argue one has a duty to do such, particularly if one claims to choose a path of peace. An obvious step on the path of peace is avoiding violent confrontations.joshuabgood wrote: ↑Mon Aug 14, 2023 8:36 amNo it doesn't...but it explains why convictions and arrests (and the death penalties) are higher for poor people.Josh wrote: ↑Sun Aug 13, 2023 10:51 pmThat fails to explain why the crimes are committed in the first place though.joshuabgood wrote: ↑Sun Aug 13, 2023 5:37 pm

Unfortunately, the reality is some people that, me knowing not much else about them, are simply far more likely to commit violent crimes. An example is young men aged 15-30.

I'm curious where you believe these certain areas of the country are.

It was certainly the case where I used to live in Central Texas.

Re: I'm not racist, but....
I suspect there are scattered racist sentiments across the country. But the only places I've personally heard what I would categorize as blatantly racist comment being shared was in the rural South, VA, TN, and MS. I used to travel the deep south for work, in the agriculture business. LA, AL, MS, AR, FL, SC, NC, TN, VA, NC. I hear that Boston, and other places in the North have a history of a bit of racism too, and I believe it still exists. But having travelled to every state in the USA, many of them multiple times, I personally have not heard or seen elsewhere, what I have heard in the South.
When it come to poor people, and not simply racism, I suspect that would be found everywhere, but my guess is that it is found more in places where there is a larger wealth gap, than in places where things might be more equal. Just a suspicion.

The most blatant racism I have heard and encountered was in Costa Rica and Israel.

Would it surprise you to learn that the two go hand in hand?
That places with the biggest wealth gap also have more issues with racism?

Well there’s lots of things that go hand in hand. But it doesn’t mean that they are in fact one and the same.
I bet most of the time, in most places, a black person who looks wealthy, will be treated with more dignity and respect than a homeless looking white person.
