I have just reposted some of my summaries to bring them back into scope. Those are what I said. I think I'm playing it close to Scripture. I don't think I accusing or insinuating things about any specific individual or group. I think I was clear that I think that this applies to all of us.
Anyone want to agree, disagree, or talk about how they would apply these to modern Christianity or their own lives?

Re: Modern Day Pharisees
I quoted your posts. That's not reading into your posts. Do you deny that you were insinuating Phariseeism about unnamed people and groups on MN in all the examples I highlighted in those posts?Bootstrap wrote: ↑Wed May 31, 2023 11:08 amSo ... you choose to read things into my posts and hold me accountable for that, even though I am not making accusations about specific people or groups.GaryK wrote: ↑Wed May 31, 2023 11:02 am I'm simply saying, by using your own words, that I think the insinuations you make against unnamed individuals and groups on MN say more about you than the unnamed people and groups on MN you are targeting with the many insinuations of Phariseeism I highlighted in your posts.
And you insist that should be the topic of discussion. What Jesus said is the topic that gets lost in the process. Could you please stop doing that?

Re: Modern Day Pharisees
So your answer is no, you really do insist on controlling the conversation and making me the topic, and you are unwilling to discuss the summaries I provided? And it doesn't matter how many times I answer the same questions, you won't let it go?
I'm not interested in that fight. And I won't continue the fight by responding to these kinds of questions. I won't turn it on you either.
I am interested in what Jesus said about Pharisees and what we can learn from that. I put a fair amount of time into preparing those summaries to answer a question you have, could you put the same amount of effort into discussing them?

Re: Modern Day Pharisees
Can I remind you that this is not your thread and you don't get to decide how the conversation goes. Here's the OP that spawned off of your thread. Can you give some actual examples as the OP requests? Can we stick to the intent of this thread - Modern day Pharisees?Bootstrap wrote: ↑Wed May 31, 2023 12:08 pmSo your answer is no, you really do insist on controlling the conversation and making me the topic, and you are unwilling to discuss the summaries I provided? We are very aware of your thoughts on the matter.
Valerie wrote: ↑Thu May 25, 2023 6:33 am I'm inclined to start this topic after Pharisees were brought up in another topic.
Not sure where to start with this but i do think it's worthy of discussion.
Why?
Today, "some" Christians while contending for the Truth are being compared and/or equated to Pharisees.
Who is a Pharisee today? (found this statement online)
In a Christian context, a modern day “Pharisee” is someone who follows the impulse to be seen as righteous by obeying certain laws, while ignoring more important matters of the heart.
Maybe we need to step back from that to see what a Pharisee actually was and "why" Jesus often rebuked them. Then perhaps it will help us understand why some may be seen as Pharisees for engaging in the spiritual warfare of contending for the faith, the truth-
Maybe posting some actual examples to see where we may be similar or make distinctions.
What faults do we read about Pharisees that we need to caution against?
Question: Does it SEEM like to anyone else that the enemy of our souls may be using people to label Christians as Pharisees so that they will be silenced?
Anyway, if no one else is interested in contributing to this topic I will just kind of use it as a homework page.

Re: Modern Day Pharisees
Hypocrisy always results with fruit of the flesh in some aspect.Jas 3:17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
Jas 3:18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.
Gal 5:17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
Gal 5:18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.
Gal 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
Gal 5:20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
Gal 5:21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Re: Modern Day Pharisees
I have seen heresies on Menno, I have seen witchcraft in the church, strife is very obvious in this very thread.
I don’t deny to struggle with the flesh like most but what caused the biggest struggle for me to forgive was when someone used me in a sermon and repeatedly refused to answer. Eventually he did answer but the damage was already done. Boot, refusing to answer may seem to be holy and more pious at the moment but making insinuations and refusing to either deny it or admit it makes you look like a hypocrite.

Re: Modern Day Pharisees
I agree. I left Boot's thread because he wanted to discuss it a certain way. I disagreed with the premise of his thread. This is Valerie's thread and she wanted to discuss what you and I have been trying to get Boot to discuss. It looks like he's unwilling to go the direction Valerie wanted in this thread.Soloist wrote: ↑Wed May 31, 2023 12:16 pmThat goes both ways. I would like an outcome that involves actually discussing those scriptures, what Jesus is saying, and what that means for us today.Soloist wrote: ↑Wed May 31, 2023 12:16 pmThat goes both ways. That's the narrative control I'm looking for.
I'm not interested in participating in the fight, which seems to distract from all that.

Okay, I posted some scripture for you. It only became a fight when you refused to follow what the OP requested and Gary and myself challenged you on it.Bootstrap wrote: ↑Wed May 31, 2023 12:47 pm

I’m not interested in a fight but I suggest you consider recanting your insinuations if you don’t care to defend or deny them.
