steve-in-kville wrote: ↑Fri Apr 14, 2023 6:44 am Fun fact. My wife is seven years older than me. I know of many other marriages where there are large gaps in age, but no one really makes a big deal out of it (if they even know).
My wife and I are 6 years apart. We were both in our 30s when we got married.

I don't think age difference is particularly important. What I think is important is minimum ages to get married. I think 16 is too young to get married whether you are marrying another 16 year old or someone 26 or 36.
It used to be completely normal back when marriages were a lot stronger. It’s time to stop treating grown humans as children. I can’t think of any reason my grandparents should have waited around an extra 2 years.
If 16 year-olds are mature enough to get married then 16 year-olds are also mature enough to:

join the military and be deployed to fight in war zones overseas
vote
drink alcohol, smoke, buy pot, etc.
buy handguns and firearms
sign binding business contracts
be tried in adult courts for all offenses
get commercial drivers licenses and drive semis on the highways
make all their own medical decisions including being transgender without parental involvement or consent

If you believe that all of the above is true then sure, 16 year-olds are also mature enough to get married.

I teach 16 year-olds (10th graders) and I don't find ANY of the above to be true. And the only one that might be marginally debatable is voting.

I agree with you in that the listed things are not all of equal consequence.

But they all go to the maturity of 16 year-olds to make adult decisions and take on adult-responsibilities.

People here talk about how things used to be in generations past. But back in the 19th century we let 16 year-olds work and die in coal mines too. In fact we let 12 year-olds do it. The old ways weren't always correct or best. These children spent their lives working and dying a mile underground in PA coal mines in the 19th century. Breaking big rocks into smaller rocks and squeezing into small passageways that adult men couldn't fit into. Were those really the good old days?

.. If 16 year-olds are mature enough to get married then 16 year-olds are also mature enough to: ..
This is your personal “IF/THEN” supreme being logic that has nothing to do with God’s design, various faith beliefs, cultural beliefs, or U.S. law.

Speaking of OPINIONS, mine is that legal minors in the U.S. enjoy many special rights+protections, not all are optimum for every child at every moment .. to enjoy them, there will also be inconveniences .. no human law is perfect. That’s life on earth.

There is no added word from mennonitemom1 about her original interest in her OP.

Does that mean the topic should just go anywhere any individual supreme being wants?

Yes, it is my opinion.

If you disagree then go ahead and share your own opinion and argument about how 16 year-olds are mature enough to get married but NOT mature enough to vote, drink, buy drugs, or make their own medical decisions without parental consent.

Or just pick one. Say voting. If 16 year-olds are mature enough to get married and have children, why are they not mature enough to vote?

i shared my opinion above, flagging “opinion” with capital letters, to help the reading-impaired not to overlook it.

hoping mennonitemom1 will appear with some topic direction.

It’s telling how a liberal thinks that getting married and shooting up drugs and getting drunk are somehow equivalent.

I asked earlier if I could know the reasons you’re asking, but since you are after all, Mennonite Mom, I’m guessing maybe it has to do with your own children.

So… on the chance that perhaps you have a teen who is wishing to date someone significantly older than them, and you are wondering whether that would be wise, I will give my thoughts on that. I myself was a teen who dated, and married, someone much older. So my advice comes with that in mind.

First, I don’t think this is something where you can make a rule and apply it to everyone. As a parent that can be difficult, and seems unfair to the children, but each child is unique. Some people are much better prepared to handle the responsibility that will come with a relationship with an older person.

I also think the PA state laws for age of consent are a good guide. A person below the age of 18 can not be in a relationship with someone who is more than 4 years older than them.

As a parent I would want to make sure my child doesn’t get rushed or pressured into getting married before they feel ready just because their partner is significantly older. And if you sense that is happening then it’s time to have some difficult conversations. And if you suspect that the older one might push for that then it would be fair to bring it up at the beginning. Let him/her know that you will not be ok with your child getting married at a young age just because one is older and ready for it.

I would also want to make sure my child doesn’t have a relationship that feels off balance, where the older person has extra power in the relationship because of their age. That is something that wouldn’t happen automatically but it could with certain personalities. It could also be a factor if the older has much more disposable income. There’s always going to be imbalances in a relationship, but you will probably know whether your child is one who will do ok or not.

I guess a lot of this is related to whether your child has a personality that is strong enough to withstand the possible pressures placed on them by an older person. Or whether the older person has a domineering personality where they are going to exploit a young malleable person who they can mold into their ideal partner.

Now, the second part of your question has to do with whether the man or woman is older. Personally, I just can’t see why any woman over the age of 25 would ever date a guy under the age of 20. Sorry, but I think it’s fairly well understood that men tend to mature slower than women, and I just feel like the maturity level would be extremely unbalanced. But as I mentioned, everyone is different. And I’m sure there are some really mature young guys out there who are ready for that. And I feel like if the guy is younger there would be fewer power imbalances just because of the societal norms around men and women and hierarchy. So in some ways a young man might feel far less pressure from an older woman than a young woman would with an older man.

So, does it make a difference which gender is older? It makes a difference in what kind of problems might occur, but other than that, I think it’s something best handled on a case by case basis, and not by the gender makeup.

Now, if you really want actual ballpark numbers, here it is: someone under the age of 20 shouldn’t be with anyone more than 10 years older, even though that gap is likely to large for many. After the age of 20, the gap shouldn’t be larger than 20 years, once again that gap being too large for most. After 30 you can go wild.

No one said they are equivalent.

The question is at what age are children old enough to make their own adult decisions. If you think children at age 16 are old enough to make the life-altering decision to get married, have sex, start making babies, etc. Then I assume you also believe they are mature enough to engage in other adult activity, correct? Like voting, joining the military, signing contracts, making their own medical decisions, facing adult justice for any wrongdoing, etc. Correct?

I think if a 16 year old can wait two years until they can vote, they can also wait two years until they get married, start having sex, and making babies.

Yet, as a country, 16 year olds are 100% allowed to engage in fornication and get pregnant.
