Re: Philadelphia paying women to get pregnant have babies
I've met and know plenty of SF voters. I went to school on the west coast and have various school friends and acquaintances who live in SF. Some are liberal. None of them would vote to tax themselves for reparations.
As I explained above. The voters of CA have twice voted to outlaw all forms of race-based affirmative action which would include race-based reparations. Those were Prop 209 in 1996 and Prop 16 in 2020. Even if the voters of SF actually wanted to tax themselves to pay for reparations (which they don't). It isn't going to ever happen unless the Prop 209 is repealed on a statewide level. Which isn't going to happen. That notion gets more and more unpopular every year. And white liberals are actually a shrinking minority in CA. It becomes an increasingly Hispanic and Asian state with every year that passes. And I promise you that reparations are even less popular with the Hispanic and Asian populations. California is only 35% white and that percentage is shrinking. Even if a majority of CA whites were liberal (which they aren't) those numbers aren't going to pass any reparations vote in CA. Biden won CA by about 3% with whites. So that means the state population is maybe 15% or less white liberal voters.
Still want to take that wager?

Except SF voters have indeed elected their current government which is who appointed the reparations committee.
You do know SF’s mayor is a black woman, right? Can you explain how she got elected since you think only black people in a majority would ever vote for reparations?

Yes, and she has pointedly not come out in favor of reparations. If she did she did come out for $5 million individual reparation payments she would probably face recall and would certainly not get re-elected. San Francisco recently recalled other city leaders and school board members for far less as well as the AG Chesa Boudin.Josh wrote: ↑Sat Mar 25, 2023 11:33 pm Except SF voters have indeed elected their current government which is who appointed the reparations committee.

Instead she will do the usual thing which will be to put some extra dollars into education, minority arts initiatives, small business development, that sort of thing. And call it reparations.

I’ll repeat myself: the reparations board was composed by the will of the voters and generally most SF voters want that, although they don’t want radical increases in crime. But the majority of Democrats support reparations in the form of direct cash payments based on race for eligibility.

You are making an assertion with no evidence whatsoever.Josh wrote: ↑Sun Mar 26, 2023 7:49 am I’ll repeat myself: the reparations board was composed by the will of the voters and generally most SF voters want that, although they don’t want radical increases in crime. But the majority of Democrats support reparations in the form of direct cash payments based on race for eligibility.
And, in fact we actually have a test vote to judge the accuracy of your assertion. California is majority-Democratic. Tell us how the state voted on Measure 16 back in 2020. Measure 16 was about affirmative action which is essentially reparations without tax dollars. In other words cost-free reparations. It failed handily by over 15 percentage points. And it affirmed a constitutional ban on race-based reparations or preferences of any kind (affirmative action or cash payments).
Now see if you can make any sort of good faith argument that California voters will support reparations that will personally cost each of them tens of thousands of tax dollars when they soundly reject the concept of reparations when the cost is free. Go ahead and make the argument that voters rejected Proposition 209/16 because they believed that affirmative action DIDN'T GO FAR ENOUGH.
Now make the further argument that California voters are so in favor of massive cash-based reparations that they will support by 2/3 vote in each legislative body and by subsequent majority vote of the public in the next general election the repeal of the Proposition 209/16 constitutional prohibition on such payments.
All of those things need to happen before we even begin to have an actual conversation about the possibility of cash-based reparations passing anywhere in California.
And then consider that maybe these all-black advisory bodies (OK there was one Asian between the two) are simply a way for politicians to let left-wing Black activists blow off steam harmlessly, and divert attention away from them. It is performative nonsense just like when the GOP House of Representatives voted 50-something times to repeal the Affordable Care Act knowing full well that the Senate would never pass it and Obama himself would never sign it. And that they would never actually have to face tens of millions of voters who were angry that their medical coverage was taken away. Some votes are substantive and some are merely performative. This reparations business is entirely performative.
Now I will allow that there are both Black and White lefty activists who support reparations. There are people on the extreme left and extreme right who support all kinds of crazy and impractical/unconstitutional things. Abolition of private property, abolition of the Federal government, establishment of white-homelands, etc. But that is a far cry from claiming that a majority of voters support massive reparations, or that they stand any chance of ever passing.

Re: Philadelphia paying women to get pregnant have babies
SF voters support a lot of ridiculous things like defunding the police, allowing homeless people to encamp on other people’s front yards, tolerating mass shoplifting with markets fencing stolen goods often right in front of the store they were stolen from, and open air drug dealing in hard drugs.
Likewise, SF voters don’t want to enforce things like health permits for things like food carts anymore. So downtown has lots of unlicensed food carts and police and health authorities don’t do anything. It’s sort of a “libertarian” free for all.
SF does still militantly enforce things like people not putting little benches or a little free library on the sidewalk in front of their house. They send a fine to the property owner. But they won’t do anything about a person encamped on a tent on the exact same sidewalk.
