Note that California is also proposing paying $230k or so to a t black people as reparations.
It’s amusing to see Ken say it has “no chance” of happening. Well, Ken, it’s got the support of California’s governor. If I were a betting man, I’d place a wager on cash reparations based on the colour of skin happening in my lifetime.

Re: Philadelphia paying women to get pregnant have babies
not very misleading, if at all. the proposal, acted upon or not, establishes the mindset. it tempts the vulnerable.
at one point, decades ago, ignorance of results could be claimed, it’s is no longer in question.
just as is happening with “questions” of reparations based on skin color. plant a seed, watch it grow.
regarding reparations, how will costs of vast reparations already made and in progress since 1960’s?
who could reasonably estimate monetary value of reparations paid over decades?? has anyone been keeping score? is “more taxpayer funds” the sole unending response? is dollar value the only value that counts?
as well.
reports are, lots of big lottery winners end up in bankruptcy. “what if?” money isn’t the answer?
in fact, money is the easy answer. “take this, and be quiet.” “take this, and go away.”
“what if?” money is the ultimate cop-out? and fails.
as THOMAS SOWELL sometimes describes, ivory tower elites love patting themselves on their backs for how marvelous they are,
when they’re not. (to paraphrase)
do you make sure your children read THOMAS SOWELL?

$230K to every Black Californian would amount to over $569 billion dollars. So no, I don't see that happening. It would be political suicide for any politician to vote for it. Or any politician who doesn't represent a majority Black district. Which is probably 98% of them in California. So yes, I would take your wager.
That doesn't mean the government of California won't use the issue of reparations to do things like increase investment in minority communities, drop more money into majority-minority schools and that kind of thing. And even try to label those things "reparations". But actual large cash payments to every Black resident of California? Nope, I don't see that happening. Ever.

Ken, this may be a shock to you, but the people behind the reparations movement are most often white, leftist voters.
In a place like Mississippi which has the largest black population in American it’s not even on anyone’s minds.

Here is information about the reparations movement in Mississippi so apparently it is on some people's minds down there: https://www.vicksburgpost.com/2021/06/2 ... ssissippi/
And as for "white liberals" running the reparations movement. Here is the San Francisco Reparations Committee. The actual people in charge and running things as you say. San Francisco is a city that is 5% Black. Does this look like a representative selection of the city? Or a bunch of white liberals?

And here is the California State reparations committee that came up with the $230k number that you cited upstream. See any White liberals here?

Re: Philadelphia paying women to get pregnant have babies
The voters of California or San Francisco (leftist or otherwise) have never once actually voted on any reparations proposal or initiative of any kind. Not at the state level and not at the city level. There has been no voter involvement whatsoever. If that is Josh's claim then is is simply wrong. And if the voters were ever involved I expect any such proposal would go down to overwhelming defeat. Both in liberal California and liberal San Francisco.
In fact, the only somewhat similar statewide vote that has ever happened in California was Proposition 209 in 1996 which outlawed every form of affirmative action in the state. It passed handily by 10 percentage points. Prop 209 actually makes any sort of racially-based reparations in the State of California: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1996_Cali ... sition_209 Two years ago there was a ballot measure to repeal Prop 209. It was Prop 16. It was defeated by 15 percentage points so an even more resounding message from voters: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_Cali ... osition_16
All of this noise about reparations in California is state or city governments pushing the question off to advisory committees in order to bury it and/or let them take the heat. Because they know it would be enormously unpopular if it was something they ever actually made happen. And in the one-in-a-million chance that the legislature or city of San Francisco were to try and pass such a plan it would be shot down by the voters in a nanosecond by some new voter initiative. Guaranteed. It would probably be the fastest signature gathering drive in state history. In fact, neither the city of San Francisco nor the state of California can even pass any race-based reparations because they are explicitly outlawed by the state constitution. So they would have to pass a constitutional amendment first. And that is a very big hill to climb unless you have voter support, which they don't.
A constitutional amendment in CA requires passage by both houses of the state legislature by 2/3 vote and then approval by a majority of voters in the next general election. So they would have to get past that bar first, before even thinking about passing an actual reparations bill at the state or city level. That is why I will happily take Josh's bet that there won't be any reparations bills passed in either CA or SF in our lifetime.

Ken is busy telling us that nobody in SF would ever support reparations for black people because, in his mind, SF wouldn’t do such a thing because it’s 5% black. I would wager he’s never met a typical SF voter.
