Yes, the peoples of Vietnam, Cuba, Iran, and Afghanistan are just begging to get invaded by the Americans and have the Americans run their countries. Right?

Yes. Lada is mostly known for its Fiat knockoffs it built under license, but their Niva model in the 80s had a reputation as a decent off-road vehicle. There was an export version of it.Neto wrote: ↑Wed Mar 15, 2023 12:22 pmIs that the same marque as during Soviet rule? I don't remember the name anymore, but one of our pilots in Brazil owned a vehicle produced in the USSR. (Well, it was probably assembled in Brazil, as it was pretty closed to import in that era.) The advertising for those vehicles was kinda' funny - They showed one going down a badly pot-holed and rutted road, and the inscription said "The car designed for roads like yours, in a country with roads like yours."

Unless you were referring specifically to computer components, let me remind you of Hyundai and Kia.Neto wrote: ↑Wed Mar 15, 2023 9:45 am Vietnam is an interesting case. "The West" sort of won in Korea, resulting in two Korean nations. It took a long time, but a friendly relationship has apparently been established with (communist) Vietnam. Some of the computer components I use in my business are manufactured there. I cannot think of ever seeing anything made in even SOUTH Korea.

Yes, I WAS thinking of computer components, but forgot about the automobile manufacturers. (The South Korean couple who took over the Banawa project a few years after we left had one there in Brazil. It was the only vehicle I ever saw in Brazil that had an automatic transmission. I saw a Brazilian Chrysler with an automatic in Brasilia, but it wasn't being driven anymore. This Korean brother knew the top management guy at the Brazilian Kia plant, and so his friend shipped it up to him from Sao Paulo by truck, to Porto Velho, where we were. So they had automatics down south in Brazil, but we were almost always in the interior.)ohio jones wrote: ↑Wed Mar 15, 2023 1:51 pmUnless you were referring specifically to computer components, let me remind you of Hyundai and Kia.Neto wrote: ↑Wed Mar 15, 2023 9:45 am Vietnam is an interesting case. Yes, there are possibly other brands made there as well. I have only used certain brands of RAM, mostly Kingston, HyperX, and G.Skill. Sometimes others, if I'm upgrading an old system for someone, and cannot get those brands in the older types of RAM, like maybe Patriot.Josh wrote: ↑Wed Mar 15, 2023 2:25 pm

Brazil used to have unique tariffs so IBM made computers there for the domestic market, based on America and Japanese designs. Some really interesting stuff since they only made basically 1 model as opposed to the many models elsewhere.

Judging by the flood of immigrants we are getting it seems more like they want to come here and have their lives run by Americans rather than the Chavistas, Castros, Mullahs, and Taliban who run the show back home.

… it’s just my imagination that a place like Afghanistan fought the Soviets and then the Americans for a continuous 45 years?Ken wrote: ↑Wed Mar 15, 2023 2:50 pmJudging by the flood of immigrants we are getting it seems more like they want to come here and have their lives run by Americans rather than the Chavistas, Castros, Mullahs, and Taliban who run the show back home.

Re: Russia Invades Ukraine 2022
What does that have to do with anything? You were claiming that Iran, Afghanistan, Cuba, etc. were thriving despite sanctions. The number of people who want to leave those places belies that point.Josh wrote: ↑Thu Mar 16, 2023 12:33 am… it’s just my imagination that a place like Afghanistan fought the Soviets and then the Americans for a continuous 45 years?
