Well, Trump came out with a solution today.

Create a new Federal police force for the Department of Education that will go into schools and enforce school discipline. Or else send in the FBI to monitor elementary classrooms I guess if he is using the DOJ. It isn’t exactly clear.

So much for the Republican notion that we need to abolish the Department of Education. Just last year Trump himself called for the abolishing of the Department of Education. Now he wants to militarize it and send Federal enforcement officers into schools? There are over 13,000 school districts in the US and over 130,000 public schools. That is going to be some massive new Federal enforcement arm of the DOE. I’m curious what, exactly, they are going to do? Arrest misbehaving students and put them in Federal prison? We don’t even have Federal juvenile prisons or Federal reform schools. Those are all state and local.

Or it could be "enforced" the way the federal government seems to enforce everything else in education - like Title IX. Personally, I would prefer the federal government had nothing to do with education. It belongs in the hands of the parents.

So every time a kid is bullied or a kid misbehaves in class we make a Federal case out of it and take it to Federal court?

Do you even conceive of the ridiculousness of that idea?

In any event, Title IX is a Federal statute. So if that is what Trump actually means then that would require that Congress pass some new Federal School Discipline Statute to empower the DOE and DOJ to investigate and prosecute incidences of school misbehavior. And then we would probably have to triple the size and budget of the DOE in order to hire all those new Federal school discipline investigators and prosecutors.

Blows my mind that MAGA loyalists would get on board with this. They are already naturally jumpy about Federal power and over reach. I mean the whole complaint lately was that the parents need more power in the schools. Not the state, or feds.

You're the one that came up with that idea. Josh said he didn't think the feds ought to be involved.

I guess if the FBI doesn't already have enough to do with terrorism, international drug cartels, and massive corporate fraud, they can send all their surplus agents to the local high schools so they can take over for old Mrs. Howell's ISS (in school suspension) classroom and deal with all the kids who act up in class

Trump came up with the idea not me. I posted it here to criticize the idea.

I find it astonishing that after 4 years of running the Federal government he still doesn't seem to know the first thing about it.

It is just mindless pandering. He doesn't actually have a plan to address school discipline at the Federal level.

It is just like he claimed all those years that he had a secret health care plan to replace the ACA (Obamacare) with something better once the Republican congress repealed it. Of course he didn't have that either. Not even one page of a plan.
