This guy above seems to think that all Google should be doing is maximizing add revenue.
What else do you expect a publicly traded advertising company to do?

Hamilton 68, which claimed to be "a new tool to track Russian disinformation on Twitter," was nothing more than a scam used to implicate the accounts of regular people who had opinions that the Democrat left and their complicit partners in media didn't like.

In the latest Twitter Files, dropped by Matt Taibbi on Friday, it was revealed that Hamilton 68 was a "scam." "Instead of tracking how “Russia” influenced American attitudes, Hamilton 68 simply collected a handful of mostly real, mostly American accounts, and described their organic conversations as Russian scheming," Taibbi wrote.

Hamilton 68 created a list of 644 Twitter accounts that they claimed could "directly attribute to the Russian, Chinese, or Iranian governments or their various news and information channels." They said they would not provide the list outright because that would give these governments a chance to take the accounts down and create new ones to fill that space.

The only issue was that these accounts were, in most cases, not bots but actual people who disagreed with the going Democrat, leftist narrative. And Twitter knew it.

Google is far more than an advertising company.

That's how they make their money. One of the problems with a publicly-traded for-profit corporation is that it has a duty to its shareholders to make as much profit as possible. And thus a company like Google ends up doing whatever it can to sell as many ads for as much money as possible.

Department of State’s Global Engagement Center (GEC)

“Elon Musk calls out little-known agency for doing big, shady things: ‘Worst offender in US gov’t censorship’ “
https://www.bizpacreview.com/2023/02/07 ... p-1330946/
“Chief Twit” Elon Musk has named the agency he believes is guilty of the most government censorship, calling the little-known and clandestine Department of State’s Global Engagement Center (GEC) a “threat to our democracy” on Monday.

“The worst offender in US government censorship & media manipulation is an obscure agency called GEC,” he tweeted, adding, “That is the line they fed the media about me.”

Most Americans have never heard of the agency before, but they know who most Americans are. ..

Independent journalist Matt Taibbi issued the 12th installment of the “Twitter Files” on January 3 that explained exactly why the agency is so dangerous. He called the GEC the “fledgling analytic/intelligence arms of the State Department.”
He charged that the agency released a Russian disinformation report to the media and flagged certain accounts as “Russian personas and proxies” based on a very dubious and politically biased list of criteria. ..

I probably see all or most of Elon's posts, because I follow him on Twitter. This is as it should be. If I don't follow somebody, it is usually for a reason. If I unfollowed Musk, I would be seriously annoyed if I saw all of his posts. I get tired of all the "suggested" posts on Twitter, but especially on Facebook. Sometimes my Facebook feed is so cluttered with suggestions of things I SHOULD be interested in or people I SHOULD follow or friend that it is truly annoying. Facebook is truly a mess. Businesses or group pages that I am actually interested in often don't show on my page. Instead, half the feed is just clutter.

I know quite well part of the reason for this. They don't show all of a business's posts to its followers because they want the business to pay for ads. It's their business model. I run a business page with over 33,000 followers, and there is absolutely no way to get content out to that many people without buying ads.

Twitter seems like it has been much more orderly, giving you the option of seeing posts from all the accounts you follow in chronological order where Facebook literally operates on a sort of auction basis, where you see the posts of whoever has paid money to get their content in front of your eyes. But I suspect even Twitter's chronological feed is fiddled with, and of course Twitter has had trouble making money. Partly because, I assume, a business's posts don't need to be boosted in order to be seen by its Twitter followers.

I would guess profitable social media is cluttered and objectionable because the profit model demands it, which would suggest Twitter will follow.

From a marketing standpoint, Facebook ads are still among the most effective in my experience. So, many people clearly are used to this kind of experience on social media - being targeted by companies that they either follow, are targeting them through ads, or that Facebook thinks they will like. With all the fragmentation into alternative social media sites, Facebook is still paramount for my business, for whatever reason.
