You willing to support that?

As for the rest? This is happening in DeSantis country. Maybe he should stop his ridiculous "stop Woke Act" and stop wasting time censoring books in every classroom in the state, looking for CRT under every carpet, and tracking girl's menstrual cycles. And instead start dealing with real problems facing Florida like school violence and youth violence.

I don't know how he plans to make the case for getting nominated for the presidency if he can't manage his own state.
The topic is on Youth violence, not Ron DeSantis. None of what you mentioned here will stop school and youth violence. Will we blame every governor for the youth violence in their state? How did the current addled president get nominated, when he couldn't control his own family.

That aside. Children are a product of their homes. As long as we have fractured, dysfunctional homes, we will have dysfunctional children. Also it is the liberal mindset that created a society where life is cheap. Our nation's schools teach children they come from nothing more than pond scum. And that it is okay to kill children, based on their size, level of dependency, and environment. These children see a president and all his lemmings honor, glorify and lift up a man who served eight jail terms on various charges, including drug possession, theft, and trespass. A man who while robbing a pregnant woman, pointed his gun at her pregnant belly and threatened to kill her and her unborn baby. Is it any wonder why violence is rampant with some of our nation's youth.

The primary student who attacked the girl has been arrested and is being charged.

1) What other (more severe) consequences should this student face?

2) What concrete, preventative steps should the school have taken to prevent this from happening?

In this case, a school might train older pupils as "mediators", i.e. prepared to participate in an excited discussion and trained to calm the moods.
I have often had opportunities to observe Turkish youth groups here in Germany. They are generally more temperamental and discussions are more prone to lead to violence, but on the other hand they have a "native" or "inborn" culture of intervening, calming and "mediating", which the Germans lack (well, mostly did not need). So, "mediating" must not necessarily be taught in schools like a foreign language, but can be developed from habits within the youth culture itself.

Solution ? The Gospel.

Parents and their children need to become followers of Jesus.

The question is more what can we do ?

The Bible says we should share the Gospel and believe that being born again is the entrance into a new life that gives us the power to overcome sin.

Do we (and I include myself) just give head nodding to this or are we engaged in sharing the Gospel that can make real change in lives ?

But to a child who is being abused… we do not tell them or their parents, “well, what you need is the perpetrator to receive the gospel”. Dealing with that is the government’s job. In this case the government refused to do anything, until the issue was brought to light by the TV news.

When I think back of my youth days getting beat up was very common and to some degree an accepted norm where I went to school. It was not of media interest. We learned to avoid those who were looking for a fight and there were always those who just wanted to beat up on others for some reason. Sometimes because mom and dad beat on each other. I remember being told to just avoid certain kids that want to do violent things. This was not always possible but most times it was.

I think the affect of TV violence and most board and video games is a cause behind some of this. I don't believe a child can watch and play these games involving violence and it not have some evil affect on them.

I am not generally in support of Christian schools to isolate children from the world but it might be the way most Christians will need to go to protect their kids.

DeSantis is the governor of Florida and has taken it upon himself to run the schools in Florida.

Josh asks "what should we do about it?" Well, I live on the very opposite corner of the country. But it is perfectly reasonable to ask why DeSantis isn't dealing with this problem. It is his problem. Looks like a complete failure of governance on his part.

Ken,

The problem of older students beating up younger students is not specific to Florida.

The governor also doesn’t run public school districts. They are independent at subject to state law. The parents reported their children were being abused and the school district did nothing.

I agree. Blaming the Governor of Florida for boys beating up a 9 year old girl, is just ridiculous.

I was beaten up a few times at school. The only reason why we are talking about this case is because someone with a cell phone was able to record this and post it on social media. I'm not convinced that schools as a whole are more violent than in the past, but instead that we are more aware when something happens. This is not necessarily a bad thing.
