Curious - where does this text say it is talking to unbelievers ?Josh wrote: ↑Sun Jan 22, 2023 10:48 amWell, Hutterites are believers, not unbelievers, so this scripture doesn’t apply to them.gcdonner wrote: ↑Sun Jan 22, 2023 9:32 am I suppose there is reason given in 1Corinthians 7 for a person to leave their spouse, depending on how you read the passage. There is no sin in separation, or even divorce, the sin is in re-marriage while the first spouse is still alive.1Co 7:10 And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband:

If a woman (or a man) is in a physically abusive relationship, I would encourage separation, even while still praying for the spouse. Which is better, to die from an abusive person (think children here too) or to live separately and protect the family?
There have been a number of cases where abusive husbands (usually) amongst Mennonites and Amish should have been put away long before they were "caught". If the law takes them away or if the spouse leaves, in either case there is a separation.
What do y'all think about those situations?

Based on his obnoxious videos it didn't seem like a stretch.

If a brother has a wife who is not a believer and she is happy to live with him, he should not divorce her. And if a woman has a husband who is not a believer and he is happy to live with her, she should not divorce him. For the unbelieving husband is sanctified because of the wife, and the unbelieving wife because of her husband. Otherwise your children are unclean, but now they are holy. But if the unbeliever wants a divorce, let it take place. In these circumstances the brother or sister is not bound. God has called you in peace. For how do you know, wife, whether you will bring your husband to salvation? Or how do you know, husband, whether you will bring your wife to salvation?

Re: Anabaptist woman flees colony
A few years ago an Amish woman began coming to our meetings, first to the congregational meetings, then later joined our "small group". The story was that her husband was abusive, but after some time the real story came out - she just wanted out of the Amish, and spun this tale of emotional abuse to get people to help hide her. (She claimed he had threatened her life, when in actuality, he just wanted to encourage her to return home.) Eventually she left our small group, and ran off with another man. We also have an Amish man living close by here whose wife left him for "the world" years ago already now. Like others have said, it's not difficult for some one to "leave the Amish". They do not go kidnap them back to "re-educate" them.

The question has to be asked..."Believers in what or whom?"Josh wrote: ↑Sun Jan 22, 2023 10:48 amWell, Hutterites are believers, not unbelievers, so this scripture doesn’t apply to them.gcdonner wrote: ↑Sun Jan 22, 2023 9:32 am I suppose there is reason given in 1Corinthians 7 for a person to leave their spouse, depending on how you read the passage. There is no sin in separation, or even divorce, the sin is in re-marriage while the first spouse is still alive.1Co 7:10 And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband:

When the one challenging the Hutterite doctrine happens to challenge everybody’s doctrine, there is nobody he claims is good enough. He’s like the guy who excommunicated everyone except his wife and is on the way to excommunicating her if she doesn’t cook supper right.
It tends to make you a little skeptical of his claims

Re: Anabaptist woman flees colony
I didn't follow the link to the original story so I am unfamiliar with the context. I was merely challenging the statements about a woman not being able to leave under destructive influences. Nor do I know the intent of the woman or the man who is doing the "deliverance".Soloist wrote: ↑Sun Jan 22, 2023 3:00 pmWhen the one challenging the Hutterite doctrine happens to challenge everybody’s doctrine, there is nobody he claims is good enough.
