I think with New Year’s Day falling on a Sunday this year the calendar just worked out that way.
What impact does the NFL Superbowl have on your life?

It does seem to be on Sundays. Our church has experienced schedule conflict when planning Sunday evening events.

I guess technically you would have to cross the IDL at precisely midnight, but it sure seems that way when you depart Saturday evening and arrive Monday morning, 15 hours later.RZehr wrote: ↑Thu Jan 19, 2023 11:58 amHow do you skip a day entirely?ohio jones wrote: ↑Thu Jan 19, 2023 11:19 am Just looked it up on the calendar. Re: What impact does the NFL Superbowl have on your life?
Pro football has always been on Sunday. It is sort of the agreement with the other levels of the sport to not step on each other’s turf. Traditionally…
HS Football is on Friday nights
College Football is on Saturdays
Pro Football is on Sundays
That has been loosening up in recent years due to TV money. So we have Monday Night Football and now the NFL has Thursday games they broadcast on Amazon Prime. College sometimes has Friday night games on TV and sometimes Thurs. and Weds. because ESPN and FOX Sports have a lot of airtime to fill. But the HS leagues get upset when their Friday night turf is invaded because people are less likely to go to games in HS stadiums on Friday nights if they have a full suite of football to watch at home on TV.
Each level of the game depends on the one below it, so it does the NFL no good to diminish the college game by having games on Saturday. That is their source of players and the colleges need to make money too. Likewise, the colleges don’t want to diminish HS football by taking over Friday nights because HS is where they get their players and with no HS football the college game dries up.
That is basically why the NFL will always be on Sundays.
Other sports like Basketball and Baseball have multiple games per week so they play all the time on any day. But football does just one game per week and aside from the occasional Thursday and Monday game, pro football will always be Sunday. Football games are also usually longer than baseball or NBA games so it is kind of different to go to say a night baseball game on a Wednesday in July when it is warm and pleasant compared to a Wednesday night NFL game in Chicago in December when it is cold and dark and the game will last longer into the night.
During the NFL playoffs the college season is already completely over, so they spread their playoff games to happen both Saturday and Sunday since there are no college games happening. So this weekend we have both Saturday and Sunday NFL playoff games because that means more TV revenue. But the Super Bowl has always been on Sunday.

I didn't know this until recently but the reason pro football only plays once/week is that it takes all that time for players to recuperate from games. It is that brutal to a body, at least on a pro level.

It is the same at all levels of the sport. And in recent years, in all levels of the sport they have really dialed back on the contact during practice. So your typical HS, college, or pro team isn’t doing much actual contact during weekly practices. Maybe one day a week when the rest of it is skill development, strength and fitness, run through of plays and such. Back when I was playing HS football around 79-81 we were out there banging away pretty much every day in practice. That never happens anymore unless you have a really old-school coach who doesn’t know better.steve-in-kville wrote: ↑Thu Jan 19, 2023 1:22 pm I didn't know this until recently but the reason pro football only plays once/week is that it takes all that time for players to recuperate from games. The game is also much more wide open and athletic than it used to be, even at the HS level where most good teams run some version of the spread office that is all about speed and athleticism.

Sudsy,
There are multiple reasons why I do believe it is wrong to watch or be involved in for Christians. You would find this to be relatively agreed upon in the Mennonite conservatives.
It’s a little like watching tv, there isn’t anything expressly condemned by direct Scripture, but one simple reason is that it almost always (if not always) on a Sunday.
Another is that the half time shows are inappropriate in terms of dress and action. The cheerleaders is another issue. I know you disagree with several of these things but I would strongly feel that someone who is led by the Spirit has either seared their conscience, or is going to if they continue to watch and participate in this pagan activity.
I would have a personal conviction on it as well. Some of my personal convictions such as long sleeve shirts are mine and not imposed on others such as my son.

Yeah, the halftime shows. Although they are never actually broadcast on TV except during the Super Bowl. During the regular season and playoffs, halftime is when they cut away for ads and for the studios to show scores and highlights from other games around the league. Same thing at the college level, the only time they show any halftime show is sometimes during the big bowl games. The rest of the year they never do.Soloist wrote: ↑Thu Jan 19, 2023 1:32 pmSudsy,

What is less than "Absolutely none at all"? Like it affects me NEGATIVELY. I was once unwittingly trapped in a situation where the main attraction - the reason I was invited over - was because of this very thing.

Thankyou for the response. I'm not sure you do know with what I do and do not agree with but I'll leave it at that. I will add that by video recording a television program we do have the means to fast forward advertising, half times and watching it on a day other than Sunday.Soloist wrote: ↑Thu Jan 19, 2023 1:32 pmSudsy,
