Things that are not part of politics happening presently and how we approach or address it as Anabaptists.

Howard Bean

Post by I Timothy »

Howard Bean was arrested last summer for sexual. These are charges from over 20 years ago. There are also other allegations going back further. Howard Bean was a talented talker and a bishop. What effect will these allegations make on the church? Does this nullify the work he did as a minister and bishop? Should those he baptized, ordained and married seek to have those events redone by a properly credentialed minister or bishop? Can the church accept the work of a corrupt man like this? I did notice that CLP still is selling his books and SS material, is this proper? Or do we respond as the Protestants would? The Protestants would mostly accept the work of broken men because we are all fallen. How will this play out?

Provincial police have arrested and charged a 72-year-old man in connection to a historical sexual assault investigation in the Township of Perth East.

In a media release, police said the charges arise from events that took place in 2001 when the victim was a teenager and the accused was in a position of authority.

Howard Bean, 72, of East Zorra-Travistock Township is now charged with:

Sexual Assault on a Person Under 16 years of age
Sexual Interference
Bean is scheduled to appear in court in Stratford at a later date.

What was the outcome of that case? I never did hear.

TGS did finally pull Harold Herr’s books from their catalogue. Of course, Mr. Bean isn’t convicted as far as I know, but he has a lot of books in a lot of catalogues.

At some point, the admonition in the New Testament to choose leaders “above reproach” would be wise to follow. The moderate-conservative world has utterly failed at this.

This is the same vicious cycle I see over and over. People hear rumors and approach leadership about the abuse. Leadership, depending on the social/economical standings of accused, will either blow it off as "the accusation didn't hold water". Or if the accused are not high enough on the social/economical ladder, will feed the rumors themselves.

And yes, I have seen this happen. Numerous times.

Let me make an analogy.

Suppose you, me, and a hundred other like minded people get together and invest some money in a business. Perhaps each of us puts up $10,000. With our new business, we elect a board and then appoint a CEO / President, CFO (accounting director), and so on.

Business goes well and we turn a profit, except that rumours circulate the CEO is stealing money from the treasury and that the CFO is aware of it. However, he is a really powerful and amazing CEO and runs the business well, so we just try not to think about it, and our company is paying us dividends so it can’t all be that bad.

Zoom forward 10 or 20 years, and now allegations come forward that he also has been stealing from customers if he can get away with it (perhaps just a $20 here and there from someone’s wallet if they aren’t looking, or he stole a customer’s lawn mower from their house, and so on). Bizarre stuff, sort of minor, but also very disturbing.

Yet this same guy has written and published a series of books on:

- The importance of integrity in business
- Why stealing is wrong
- How to train your employees not to steal

He is an accomplished writer and speaker on these topics and many have been blessed by his books. In fact, a former thief or two has been helped by these books and turned away from their old life.

When confronted, he does admit to stealing the lawn mower but also says he wasn’t aware it was wrong. Meanwhile, allegations come forward from another person (who has tall, overgrown grass) that he has had 4 or 5 lawn mowers stolen, including an expensive zero turn he bought on credit, but he would rather not make a public accusation as most people don’t consider him credible due to his messy yard.

Finally, the police decide to investigate all these missing lawn mowers. The “smoking gun” is service records for a stolen serial number were found at the local dealership with the CEO paying for the repair visits. The prosecutor brings charges.

Now, what shall we do?

- Should we keep selling and studying his books?
- Exactly how effective was his business leadership? The employees and customers who formerly loved the business are devastated by this news.
- No lawn mower is safe. Should we lock up our garages tightly? Put a tracking device on them?
- Is our business actually successful?
- The board asks the CEO to step down but the bylaws say he may appoint a successor. Do we allow this?

I remember when the Clinton/Lewinsky things was making headlines. The economy was good and many Americans were guilty of the same thing. So no one really cared what the president did in the Oval Office.

Confession
When spotting the title, I mistook this thread as about the comedic character Mr. Bean. Carry on.

Note I am not making light of the subject. I am laughing at how my brain works in my advanced age. Sexual predators are no laughing matter.

My first thoughts went to the funny Mr. Bean, as well.

You are right, sexual predators are no laughing matter.
